PostPosted: Thu Nov 18, 2004 12:21 am    Post subject: Problems with Linksys RT31P2 and SSH VPN Client Reply with quote Back to top

I got my new Vonage number about a month ago and have been very pleased with the voice service so far. I got the new Linksys RT31P2 (firmware v1.24.xx) router in the mail, plugged it in, and everything was looking good. I went to try to connect back to the office VPN using my SSH Sentinel v1.4 client and made a successfull connection. However, once I tried to use anything across the VPN connection I was getting very slugging response times (web browsing on an intranet) and disconnects (pcAnywhere or VNC). I have confirmed that (obviously) web stuff works fine when not going through the VPN tunnel and pcAnywhere and VNC work fine when not going through the VPN tunnel. They all even work fine while the VPN client is actually connected, but I'm connecting to other resources that do not travel across the VPN tunnel.

I have tried playing around with the VPN Passthrough settings in the Linksys' setup, tried adjusting the MTU size as suggested in Linksys' manual, have port forwarded both TCP and UDP port 500 (IKE) to my computer, and have disabled the QoS. Nothing has helped. I e-mailed both Linksys tech support and Vonage tech support a few days ago and am slowly progressing up the chain.

So far Vonage tech support has said to "bypass the firewall/vpn server." I think maybe they got confused because if I did that, then there wouldn't be any need for a VPN connection at all.

Linksys has been equally as helpful. They suggested that I duplicate my port settings from my previous router. On my old router, I didn't have to have any ports forwarded at all to have it work.

My currently theories are:

A) There is a firmware bug in the Linksys RT31P2 that is causing my VPN connection to establish, but not be completely successful.
B) There is some strange setting on the router that is somehow interfering with the VPN connection, but not disrupting it completely.

Ideally I'd like to see the issue get fixed, but in the meantime I suppose I could just put my original router back in, connect the computer and the Vonage adapter to that. Down side to that is I lose the QoS feature in the Vonage adapter.

So..... anyone else having any strange VPN issues like this?

trent, i think i am having the same problem you are. I just received
my Vonage router today (linksys rt31p2) .. everything works fine
until i opened an SSH connection to my work. the connection was
made but after a minute, the connection is dropped.

did you eventually find out what's wrong? let me know.

thanks.

I run SSH (port forwarding) to a Unix box and also use the ATT Global VPN client to connect back to the office without issue.
My configuration is even more convoluted that yours.

PC -> Xincom Load Balancing NAT router -> RT31P2 -> Netgear NAT Router -> DSL Modem

The other side of the Load Balancing router goes to a Cable Modem but for my test I've disabled that interface.

No port forwarding, no MTU changes, SSH and VPN "just work".

If you don't need any of the vpn pass through enabled, disable all those under the security tab. This seems to have fixed the hanging ssh (also imaps) connections.

I've disabled everything in the vpn pass through sections and my ssh sessions still hang after no activity. Since other people have reported problems, I guess I'll put it down to a crappy piece of hardware/firmware.

Im having the same problem with a program I use for VATSIM (Virtual Air Traffic Simulation) network. On the voice server I can receive voice fine the first minute...if there is no traffic for a minute I cannot receive voice anymore. Has to be some firmware bug in the equipment.
