For the first time in over a year, my RT31P2 went bricked for apparently no reason. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, bricked means the routers firmware had been corrupt or deleted leaving the router as nothing more than a paperweight. After toying with it for a while, I decided to hook a PC up to the internet directly and began the long and tedious search for a copy of Vonage's hard to come by firmware. I eventually came across a copy and initially hesitated upon uploading it for fear it would brick the router completely. I eventually got tired of waiting for an e-mail back from Vonage. So, I decided to upload it. To my amazement, it worked. Voice works, internet works, and amazingly all my forwarded ports and settings were kept. So for everyone out there who uses Vonage, I suggest learning to use TFTP to put a firmware image on your router. It works spendidly once again. It is not hard to do, and you need not know anything except your routers IP address, admin password, and how to use the tool. Make sure the tool is in binary mode though =). Anyway, that's my experience.
[edit] Also make sure your firmware image matches your router model [/edit]

Where did you find the firmware? Hopefullly it did not have an "NA" in the filename or anything, because you probably got the non-Vonage version. If their network sees that, you may just get a suprise and get booted off. It may be working, but for how long. I do NOT recommend that people try this, as it may get you kicked off, but seems like it could be a violation of the TOS.

Meh, didn't change any hardware, or software. I simply reloaded a copy of the old firmware. I was quite well aware of the TOS, so I made sure not to modify the firmware in any way shape or form. And no, it did not have the NA on it. Even if it did, that firmware would have not uploaded even if I had tried. And as a result of my so called "tampering", in which I doubt it could be called that because I did not modify anything, I have save myself and Vonage some time and money. Therefore, Vonage can devote its time to customers who are not able to do such things for lack of knowledge. I simply returned it to the state in which I originally received it.

The issue is, is that the Vonage-branded version of the firmware (a type of SOFTWARE) is not generally accessible by you and I, therefore, I was wondering where it came from. It would certainly suck if you got it from somewhere (maybe a DSL-related site) where the locked down portion, where the SIP credentials are, had someone else's login info. BTW, can you access the secret portion of the firmware from the web login? If you can, that's not good. I'm just trying to prevent a less-technologically advanced person than yourself from getting their service turned off.

Heh. No it didn't. The router would reject the firmware if it didn't match. It wasn't that the firmware was gone, it was that it was corrupted. If it was completely gone, the router would be bricked beyond recovery, and I wouldn't have made the post. And very simply, Vonage should open up its firmware to their consumers, as remotely updating firmware can lead to more problems than it solves.
