PostPosted: Wed May 23, 2007 11:47 am    Post subject: Call delay Reply with quote Back to top

I've been reading about the call delay solutions and it seems the answer is bandwidth.

I've noticed my mother has a 1 second delay at her house, and on my line, which is right down the road is ok. However when I call my girlfriend there is a 4 second delay. She is the only person where delay is that bad. She lives in a large city, in a crowded townhouse neighborhood. Would her end be the problem? She has a regular landline so that makes me think its not her fault. I've turned my call quality up and that didn't do anything to it.

Ideas?

Thanks,
Chris

Not really sure what your question is asking. Are you talking about a delay when dialing a number to the time it starts ringing or a delay in your voice or your girlfriend's voice when having a conversation? Either way, it would be helpful if you could first post some basic information on your set up. Here is the link for the forum page that tells you what information to give. http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic7191.html And then maybe give a little more detail in the description of your problem. It will make it a lot easier for people to start giving you some good answers to help with your problem.

Sounds like a strange problem since it only happens when calling one number. I assume you have the same problem every time you call? Is there anyway you could call another person that lives close to your girlfriend or perhaps call her at a work number and see if you have the same problem? Does she have any problems when talking to someone other than you? That could help narrow down the problem. You mentioned that you have turned up the call quality. I assume you mean that you set the bandwidth saver to 90kbps. Have you tried using the 30kbps? If the problem was with your internet service, lowering the call quality may help. Although your test results look pretty good. The QOS is a little low which could indicate that your connection isn't providing a constant bandwidth stream.

A question for you - the one number that you call that has the worst latency, is this a mobile phone? Cell phones add about as much latency as Vonage does, which can certainly make a difference.

I would also encourage you to try the different call quality settings and see if that makes any difference.

My gf's line that has the worst voice delay (4 sec) is a landline. I asked her what service she has and she said Windstream. She is way electronic illiterate so take it with a grain of salt.

I've only noticed a delay with maybe 1 other person. I've had Vonage for around a year and just recently has the biggest problem occured. When I dial her number the ring will be normal for two rings, then it switches and sounds grainier.

I'll try calling someone else in her area and then try with the lowest quality. Currently I have it up to 90.

Thanks for the help.

After you change your call quality setting, make sure you reboot your phone adapter. Keep us posted on any changes!
