Having outbound audio issue since I signed up a few weeks ago.
It has happened in as quick as 1 minute or could be fine for up to 10minutes but always happens
People on the other end can't hear me but I can hear them saying "hello? are you there, hello..."

Is anything else going on while you are making these phone calls?

Sounds to me like a QoS problem so if you are downloading/uploading files or running Bit Torrents while on the phone (or other bandwidth intensive operations) that could be the issue.

I don't know much about the modem you are using, but based on the test results it looks like you have a great connection when idle.

The other thing I will add which many others on this forum think (and I agree) is that the Vonage devices are good as Voip devices, but are poor routers.

Many here use one of the Linux based routers (Linksys WRT54GL or the Buffalo WHR-G54S or Buffalo WHR-HP-G54S) and then load aftermarket firmware like DD-WRT or Tomato on it. for QoS improvements.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply,

I only have one pc on this network, it is not running any bittorrents etc..

The PC is a Point of sale terminal with WinXP, the POS software and nothing else. It only uses internet for credit card verification.

I have this PC plugged into the SMC, the VT2142 is its own drop and in a DMZ from the SMC router.

I have the same issue on the fax line on port 2 so I don't think its the phone, phone cord, or the TA port.

I think it has to be either the TA or my internet connection goes from great to crap at random, but I have not been able to capture that with repeated line tests

The problem is your SMC modem. I know it doesnt look like it but there is an aggressive SPI firewall in there that messes up the Voip traffic. I believe you must turn off intrusion detection inside the SMC Modem/gateway.

I forget what the default login is but if you turn that off it SHOULD fix it. Should being the operative word here. Those SMC modems suck IMHO.

Your internet traceroutes, pings, bandwidth tests are not lyiing. Your ISP 's backbone is prob more or less ok, its just that pesky modem. IF you manage to turn that off and you still have issues post again or PM me.

Good luck

I agree the SMC ****!
I have had many issues with an older SMC gateway from comcast at another location, http traffic was great, ftp traffic would stop working every 3 days or so and require a reboot of the router to fix.

I asked for just a plain ole surfboard but comcast insists on using these SMC gateways for commercial accounts. The install tech didn't understand why I cared, he has never heard of any problems with them.. Ya, okay!Rolling Eyes

I have the login for it, that is how I put the Vonage adaptor in a DMZ which should by rights bypass the spi/firewall for the Vonage adapter

I may bring in my surfboard from home, also comcast, to switch out the SMC and see what happens.

The only thing Vonage customer service has been succesful at is getting my BP up so I probably will give up on that

OK, you say you brought a different modem from home, so I gather this problem is somewhere else. Why not try it the other way? Take the Vonage box home and see how it works there. You've already surmised that the problem is either the ISP or the Vonage adapter, and I agree. One more test should tell you which.

Well knock on wood, my dropped audio issue seems to be resolved.

I spent the better part of yesterday afternoon doing some ping tests and discovered some ramdom spikes of packet loss. I called into Comcast and they sent a tech out this morning.

I must admit I thought they would send out a few pings and tell me its fine but the guy spent sometime with me and found an issue at the pole. He reconnected me to a differant tap and all seems good!

Of course only time will tell if its fixed, my friends are getting a little tired of me calling them to test my phone. Lol

They probably are. One trick I've used is to call my office and leave a message on the answering system. Then call back using remote access and listen to a playback of the message. If it's broken up, you won't know which direction was the bad link (until you go back to work), but you'll know it's no good.
