Hey, I have got a charter cable internet service which connects through the cable modem. I use the USB port for connecting the laptop and cable modem to access internet. The cable modem does have an ethernet port and when i use this port to connect the Vonage device with the modem I am able to use the Vonage phone but I am not able to access the internet in my laptop. If I unplug the cable from ethernet port in cable modem which connects the Vonage device I am to access the internet in the laptop.Can you give me a solution to use the internet in my laptop and Vonage same time.

I guess the cable modem i have is just a modem and not a router cum modem.

your reply would be much appreciated.

Unfortunately, most modems that have both USB and ethernet connections do not allow both to be used at the same time, as you've found. You don't say what kind of Vonage adapter you have, but most have at least one ethernet output. You can connect your Vonage box to the modem and the laptop to the ethernet output, if your laptop also has an ethernet card.

Likewise, if the laptop has both ethernet and USB ports, you can set it up to bridge from the USB to the ethernet, so that you can connect the laptop to the modem and the Vonage box to the laptop. This isn't very desirable, since it requires that the laptop always be on to use the phone.

Unforturnately, if the laptop doesn't have an ethernet port, then neither solution works.

Why don't you use the motorola device and use it to connect your laptop to it via ethernet instead of the usb. Like this:

modem -> motorola -> laptop.

then you don't have to go out and buy a wireless router.

Why spend more money than needed?

Unless of course, your motorola Vonage device is not a router? Does it have an ethernet port for the modem and at least one other port for a computer?

If so, then connect that port to your laptop.
