I recently came back to Vonage after changing Internet service from DSL to cable (TimeWarner in So Cal). Things have been OK for the first couple weeks, but today I'm having an odd problem. Despite all phones being on-hook, Vonage thinks the line is in use. The line1 light on the router (Motorola VT2142) is blinking and the Panasonic phone has the "In Use" notifier on. When you pick up a handset you get a fast busy as if a handset were off hook somewhere. If I call my number I go straight to voicemail.

I have two lines and the second line is working normally.

I have tried resetting the Vonage router and unplugging various phones, but the problem persists. Any thoughts?

I would call in to tech & see if your two numbers are connecting through the same servers. Could be the server your disabled number connects through is down.

I called tech support and got the usual router reboot spiel. So I did that and it made no difference. The problem stays on line 1. I have a work line on line 2 and the house on line 1. If I switch the lines on the Vonage router the problem shows up on the work line and not on the house phones. So it's not a wiring problem or a phone problem, it's a Vonage problem. Or maybe a router problem, I guess.

I got transferred to the "next tech support level." The new guy had none of my information (name, phone number, problem description), so I had to start from scratch. After some amazing gyrations -- like holding down the reset button on the Vonage router for 90 seconds -- we had gotten nowhere. To his credit, the support guy did some actual troubleshooting and was able to figure out that the problem followed the phone number and was not tied to a port or phone.

Bottom line was that this was a provisioning problem. Somehow my number, which had been transferred from Verizon, fell out of the Vonage system and got de-provisioned. He was able to get it back up and running for me. All in all about 90 minutes of screwing around with tech support for a problem that should never have happened.
