Question:
How does standard Vonage service perform at different connection speeds? I know it requires 30kbps and recommends 90kbps, but is there a big difference in performance between 90kbps and, say, 300kbps, or 1Mbps?
Thanks!

I would think the faster your connection speed then the better Vonage will work, plus you can do more while on the phone. Your big concern is the upload speed. |

Vonage, at its default settings will use 90kbps. If you have 100kbps(accounting for overhead) of sustained bandwidth dedicated to the Vonage service you will be all set. Having anything over that 100kbps is just a buffer and allows you to use the internet for other things without worrying about the quality of a Vonage call. Extra bandwidth over and above what Vonage requires will NOT increase the quality of your Vonage calls at all as it will not use that extra bandwidth at all.
Now, bandwidth is just one concern when it comes to Vonage calls. Another major factor is the quality of your DSL line. If there is high latency(delay) on your internet connection or pack loss(lost data) then this will have a significant inpact on your Vonage call quality. This is even more important than bandwidth because as you said Vonage can tweak the bandwith usage down to 30kbps which in terms of broadband is next to nothing. You can test the quality of your DSL connection by running the forum Voip speed test. |
