Hi,

I'm an experienced Vonage user, and networking professional. I've been running Vonage in an office situation without any problems for the last 2 years, but when I switched at home this weekend, I'm having some problems.

My incoming audio always appears to be fine, but the other party always complains that I'm "breaking up."

I'm on TimeWarner RoadRunner. Just ran a Broadband report, and should have plenty of bandwidth available (4300 Down and 356 Up).

I'm using the PAP2 device.

I've run the Voip test here, and everything appears to be right on perfect..

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 4914280 bps
Upload speed: 363960 bps
Quality of service: 99 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 9 ms
Average download pause: 2 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 41 ms
Average round trip time to server: 85 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 3.0 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 8.4 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 6
Estimated MOS score: 3.9

I've turned my routers QOS to high on the Vonage port.

But, I'm still experiencing some problems. Is there something I've missed?

Hi, i had the same problem, i have 2 Pc's conencted to my Wifi and when i use them both, you know being a TECH, you have to understand that you are sharing your internet connection, so when going full use with the 2 pc's and the phone, you are draining up your connection.

I solved this problem by limiting my wifi connection with 1 PC and called Vonage told them to change the packetization to 20 because probably you are on a 30.
Call them and tell them you want to speak with a 2nd level tech, as soon as you get a hold of a person, tell him to change your packetization.

Please reply to me if you need further help, i know how it feels, i have been calling them for over 2 month now and NO 1 knows what and how to Trouble shoot.

S.M.

Jwalsh, you're right. The test results look great.

The first thing I'd do at this point is re-boot everything, if you haven't already. Then I'd try plugging the PAP2 directly into the modem and seeing if that clears up the problem.

You didn't say much about your equipment. I don't suppose you have a wireless router and a cordless phone?

Yes,

I do have a wireless router, and cordless phone, yes. I have tried rebooting the PAP on numerous occasions.

I experience the same problems without wireless connectivity to the router.

Nobody at Vonage seems to be able to help me with the problem. I have great service at the office using Vonage across 8 lines on a shared T1, but at home with ample bandwidth, I can't make one normal quality phone call.

It's been well over a week with this issue, and it's getting to be an annoying problem.

Hmm... Interesting. This may not even be connectivity related. I was again checking all connections to the box, and noted that my phone 1 rj11 jack doesn't "snap" into place. It can be pulled out easily. I cannot tell if this is a cable problem, or a box problem.

I would think if this was causing the problem I would experience total disconnects, not broken audio from one side. But, perhaps someone with more telephony experience can answer that?

Also, does anyone else experience issues with the cable not snapping into place on a PAP2?

Have you tried plugging the PAP2 directly into the modem? What results?

If it's bandwidth, then plugging the PAP2 into your modem with nothing else running on your network should have fixed that, so it doesn't sound like bandwidth.

Have you tried plugging a single, simple, corded phone directly into your Vonage adapter? Just to make sure you don't have a wiring or telephone problem? I know that would usually cause two-way audio issues, but it's worth a shot.

you might also want to test the other port on your PAP. Plug the phone into port 2, go to the Vonage web site and log into your account, then under "Add-Ons" select "Move a Number" and move your telephone line to port 2 of the PAP. It may take a few minutes for the PAP to be aware of the change (restarting it can speed up that process usually) and try the line again.

Today I bought a $3 target corded phone and plugged it into Vonage. It appears to have solved the problem. Even with a new phone cord, the cordless phone appears to be having problems.

Sounds like it may be time to go shopping for a new cordless, then. I just picked up a new system because the 2.4GHz cordless handset on my old AT&T system was driving me nuts with my wireless network (after coexisting for almost two years...)

Too bad, too. The old AT&T system was a very nice corded speakerphone coupled with a decent remote cordless handset. But I like my new VTech mi6897 - three handsets, all 5.8GHz and all with speakerphone, plus a speakerphone in the base.
