I am thinking of a switch to Vonage. This is really two questions, so the easy one first:
1) A friend has Vonage. Her calls arrive at my house with the caller ID name "Vonage Holdings" instead of her real name. IS this common? Can she get her real name put in the caller ID? Can I expect the same?
2) The real question. Been using Voip with another company for some time. Call quality currently is ok but I suffer random audio drop outs. I have tried a Grandstream 386 and a Sipura with the current provider and have experienced different problems with each ATA but never managed to get rid of the random drops. Sometimes they're very frequent and annoying, some days I I don't have any problems. Interestingly, the company I work for also provides me Voip service in the form of a Cisco 7960 phone that uses SCCP back to a Cisco call manager cluster over a dedicated VPN hardware devices. Calls over that occasionally drop or the audio breaks down. I am tempted to think my cable modem line is not optimal.
A quick look at the myvoipspeed test site gave me the following which kind of backs up the theory with the low qoS score?
Speed test statistics --------------------- Download speed: 2693416 bps Upload speed: 2524720 bps Quality of service: 43 % Download test type: socket Upload test type: socket Maximum download pause: 468 ms Average download pause: 5 ms Minimum round trip time to server: 38 ms Average round trip time to server: 75 ms
Voip test statistics -------------------- Jitter: you --> server: 4.2 ms Jitter: server --> you: 2.5 ms Packet loss: you --> server: 0.1 % Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 % Packet discards: 0.0 % Packets out of order: 0.0 % Number of supported Voip lines: 42 Estimated MOS score: 4.0
Sadly I don't have the real admin name/pass to really drill in to my comcast cable modem to get better info & stats, just the following from the cusadmin account:
Downstream Frequency 729000000 Hz Lock Status Locked Modulation 256 QAM Symbol Rate 5.360537 Msym/sec Downstream Power -7.7 dBmV SNR 38.038 dB
Upstream Channel Upstream Frequency 37008000 Hz Lock Status Locked Modulation 16QAM Symbol Rate 2560000 sym/sec Upstream Power 50.5 dBmV Channel ID 3
Do those figures look ok? Because both my business and personal Voip services are suffering - and mostly because I know my business line ought to be flawless - I really think this could be a line problem.
Anyone got any ideas? |

Is that just a straight forward service limitation? |

As far as I know, all that ever comes up is the phone number, and if you call another Vonage user it comes up as Vonage user and the phone number. |

I wanna make it short because i have to take out my Daughter and wife ou t Vonage Sound Quality is good, although sometimes you hear yourself (ECHO) but it never drops. But not for the WIFI phone UTstarcom, DON't buy that, No good.
I have the Dlink BLACK box and the Wifi, Black box works great, You will have problems with the name and 1800 numbers.
Try not to call Cx service (VONAGE) you willl be losing a lot of time and MAYBE, maybe get it right.
Anything i can help, don't hesitate to PM me. |

I'll chime in with my two cents. We cannot tell the difference between the quality of a Vonage phone call and a "regular" phone call. We've never experienced any drop-outs, etc. With a very limited number of PBX numbers that we call (customer service 800 #'s, teleconference #'s), I will hear an echo of my voice, but I would guess that that has happened less than 5 times in over 6 months of usage.
Except for a brief period of time around the Verizon litigation, when there were sporadic outages, Vonage's service has been bullet proof. I'm a very happy camper. We are moving, and it's nice to keep our old #. All the extra features at a low price are just icing on the cake. |

not only the 1800 #'s has echos but also if i call any number like i call Lebanon (international)or within Canada my Wife's Cell, or even i call from my Vonage no to another BELL regular line, you get the echo, 50% of the time.

Don't worry for (TS)trouble shooting, it's a netwrok problem from Vonage. I have Sympatico (BELL) Extreme speed, my trasnfer rate is @ 4.5MB/s network 99.9%
i have THE BEST that Vonage has the Wifi phone (Scrappy) and the Dlink VT bblack BOX.
1800 no's are still not going thru and today i am having more and more the lines are Busy, PRobably they have limitations on the servers. They have users more than they must have. The netwrok is overflooded.

I found my way here from your other (locked) post. I would be interested in some added feedback on the UTStarcom WiFi phone. I use an unlocked WiFi phone with a soft phone account and it works fine - both at home and with a travel router, as well as in some hotspots where I have tried it in different places. I normally use it with the volume setting at 4 (out of 5) and it seems fine to me. These days, I use an F3000 more often, but I still have the F1000.
What conditions are you using it in and what problem do you have? |
