Only prob. with what the tech failed to mention that even though you are talking to 1 caller at a time "silent" packets are still being sent on that other call leg. You will therefore be utilizing 180kbps for this 2 way call. UNLESS the Voip provider has Voice Activity Detection enabled, which will not send those 'silent' packets of data.

i did some tests
My Settings: Comcast 3000/256
Test 1: QoS on Auto - No Call 2958/237
Test 2: QoS on Auto - Call (different server than other tests though) 387\72 1054\72
Test 3: QoS on Manual 180 - No Call 2959/237
Test 4: QoS on Manual 180 - Call 1925/72
Well.. I made an attempt, but now looks like the test servers limit a number of connections per time period, so my test 2 is from a different server. All tests done at the same time though.
I am going to try for a little with the Manual 180 setting and see what happens. |

the number you enter in the manual box is the amount of bandwidth you wish to reserve for voice traffic. I have cable service in NY and I get 4.5Mb/900k service. Speed tests that I've done, as well as what you can see from snoopspecial's tests, show that your LAN gets the remainder of the bandwidth. So the basic formula is:
LANtoInternetSpeed = TotalUploadSpeed - VoiceQOSManualSetting.
The auto-detect will stay at zero if you make no phone calls and do upload tests, but then fluctuate with throughput from your voice calls. Remember, the settings page shows "QoS Upstream Rate:". This is a function of upstream traffic only and will not have any effect on your downloads as that's the opposite direction. |

1mbit is a lot to lose. You are making a call which will take up most of that, plus some overhead. I'd wager that it's just the fact that the router isn't exactly high-quality like a true Cisco router. You got about 2/3 of your advertised bandwidth WHILE making a Voip call. |

Hi pilgram -
just re-reading this again. The call left me with 1Mbit; in some cases less. I lost 2/3 of my bandwidth while i was on the call.
i agree, that perhaps the linksys router is a piece of junk, but i guess i am stuck with this as there don't seem to be other options. in a more recent post, you'll read i just graded to the newest firmware. we'll see if that solves the issues. |

I know this is a stupid question but I am going to ask it anyways
Where and how do you change the QOS?? I am a newbie and when I called tech support awhile back I was told that the RT31P2 sets the QOS by default and it can't be changed. By the many posts in this forum that does not seem to be the case.
Any help would be appreicated |

login to the router, select application and gaming select QoS Then at the bottom, voice QoS set to enable (should be set by default) with auto (set by default). |

I currently have the following setup, have had Vonage for about a week now.
Cox cable (4Mbps d/396Kbps u) dual-router setup with Vonage Linksys router in front call bandwith set at 50k QoS set to 110k upstream manual Uniden 5.8Ghz expandable phone system TRU8885-2
So far I have had no degredation of phone service while downloading large files or uploading.
My question is as follows:
When they say each call takes [x]kbps, what does that mean? Specificcally to these situations:
* One call placed, but both handsets in use (2 people on my end talking to one on the other.
* One handset used, on a call and call waiting beeps and I answer it, thus having two calls at the time.
Do each of these scenarios result in 100k being used on the calls?
What I am trying to determine is what adds bandwidth. Right now I made my setting to allow for what I determined was 2 calls plus a 10k buffer. My reasoning for using 50k calls was that it doesn't make much diffierence if any to the people I call which setting I use, but I want to be able to upload at something more than dial-up speeds while on a call.
In other words, I am trying to find that perfect balance point.
Thoughts?[/list] |
