PostPosted: Wed May 09, 2007 12:17 am    Post subject: Porting cell & landlines/Caller ID Forwarded Virtual Num Reply with quote Back to top

I operate a business in 3 separate counties with 3 separate area codes, all of which are within Vonage service areas.

I have Vonage business unlimited. Right now 'Line 1' (my only Vonage line) works fine.

Currently my 'Line 2' is with Bellsouth (now AT&T), and is a personal line (not commercial).

Currently my 'Line 3' is with Alltel (wireless, not a landline), and is a secondary phone on a family share plan (also personal).

I would like all 3 of my lines to forward to an 800# so that no matter which county the caller is in, they will get to our operator at the 800#. Right now I am spending a lot of money to do this with the 3 separate lines and I have multiple bills and providers to deal with every month.

I would like Vonage to be my only provider, so that when a caller calls any of the 3 numbers, they are forwarded to my 800#. These are inbound calls only, so the Line 2 and Line 3 would both be Virtual Numbers on my Vonage account. I understand using virtual numbers for Line 2 and Line 3 would automatically forward to my main Vonage Line 1 number - and I would have it set to forward to the 800#. That way all incoming calls would go to the 800#, that's what I want.

That is my situation, here are my 2 questions:

1) How can I prevent any nightmares trying to port my landline and cell phone #'s to Vonage as Virtual Numbers? If my numbers get lost or I loose service, my business will be completely down in the affected area, and if somehow I lost the number for good I could be completely out of business in that area which would be a disaster.

2) With the virtual numbers and 800# forwarding, will the original caller's caller ID still show up on the 800# operator's phone? I'd hope they would see the originating call's caller ID, not the virtual number or primary line number:

"John Doe - 555-222-1234" calls my virtual Vonage line 312-654-1234 which rings my main Vonage line 986-333-1234 which forwards to my 800#. Does my 800# phone's caller ID receive "John Doe - 555-222-1234"?

Thanks for any suggestions, I know this was a long post. I hope it makes sense. If this would all work out it would make my life a lot easier and would save me about $80 a month too.

those 2 numbers will be transferred to Vonage as voice lines first after which it could now be converted into a virtual numbers. with regards to transferring of numbers, you need to check first if those numbers are portable and if they are, Vonage will assign a temporary phone number for you and will always be in touch in case there are problems with the transfer

I'm not sure how a temporary number would help when callers are calling our advertised number. I'm not worried about outbound calls, only inbound. How in the world would we let callers know that we have a new temporary number if something went wrong?

I also don't understand what 'transferring as voice lines' means.

Has anybody out there transferred a number to a Vonage Virtual Number?

Alltel says they offer "Wireless Local Number Portability (WLNP)". Does that mean you can only port to another wireless company?
