I was not able to get my LinkSys (Vonage) router to obtain an IP address from my cable modem (D-Link DCM-200). I AM up and running as I connected the Vonage router to my wireless router, which is connected to my cable modem. It adds an extra hop, but it works.

At this point, I'm more curious as to why it didn't work when connected directly to the cable modem. Everything else that connects to my cable modem (whether it be the wireless router or a desktop PC) was able to get an IP address (DHCP). But, for some reason, the cable modem was not able to give an IP address to the Vonage router.

Any thoughts? TIA.

I have a DCM-200 with an RT31P2, and I've got the same problem. Those two devices just seem to not want to talk to each other. I fixed the problem by putting a switch between the two. Basically, the switch works like a regenerative patch cable. It's kind of ugly, but it seems to work.

Actually, I'm using my old router as a switch. I disabled the NAT and DHCP functionality, and plugged Linksys and D-Link devices into two of the LAN ports. Note that the D-Link cable modem must be connected to the uplink port of the switch.

Later, I'm going to try and see if putting a crossover cable between the devices fixes the problem. The Linksys device has an auto-sensing port, so maybe putting it into crossover mode will fix whatever is broken.

Ok, I'm back home from school for christmas, so I was able to mess with the DCM-200 and RT31P2 again. I cut a patch cable in half, and wired one end into a modular RJ45 jack, and started plugging random electronic components into the various metal contacts. Very Happy

Amazingly, I finally found something that worked. If I put a 33pF capacitor between the Green and Green/white wires, then the cable modem and router talk perfectly without needing a switch in the middle. I don't really know why it works, but I've now had a perfectly reliable connection for the last few hours, and it drops out predictably whenever I remove the capacitor.

Not sure if Vonage reads this colum but I do hope so - there is an issue with the DCM-200 cable modem. Having spent many many hours trying to get it to work, having to go through customer support each time and REPEAT all the same tests that will not work why do they no just list it up front - may system still does not work - any ideas are welcome - about to try the Cap

Were you able to get it working with the capacitor? I've been using it for several months now with no problems, and am wondering if the fix works for anyone but me.
