PostPosted: Fri May 04, 2007 9:51 am    Post subject: SoftPhone and Vodafone 3G. What is cost of receiving call? Reply with quote Back to top

Hi,

If I get a laptop with a Vodafone 3G mobile broadband data card and then install a Vonage Softphone, can somebody please tell me what Vonage will charge me to receive an incoming call from a BT landline number?

Does the fact that the incoming BT landline call to the Softphone number is coming in via Vodafone's network mean that Vonage will charge me extra or does it not make any difference? By this I mean, do Vodafone charge Vonage for re-routing the incoming BT landline call to the laptop Sofphone and then Vonage passes the cost onto me?

Thanks.

Mark

Vonage would not charge you anything for that type of call as they would not "see" the Vodaphone network at all. In that case, you - via your Vodaphone data account - are paying for the IP link between your PC and Vonage (3G to Vodaphone's interconnect point, then to the internet and to Vonage). Vonage only sees you connected on IP and sends the packets your way - at no extra charge to you.

This is different from a case where Vonage would send a call to the "GSM side" of your Vodaphone phone - in that case, Vonage would be calling a GSM PSTN number and the Vonage account, not the receiving phone, would be paying for the mobile link part of the call.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your reply. I understand your explanation.

My colleague wants to know if we add the SoftPhone number to the Vonage Simultaneous Ring List of our company's Vonage Primary number, and use the SoftPhone to answer an incoming landline number on the laptop, do we get charged by Vonage?

Based on what you said above, the answer to this is must be No, we don't get charged, but he won't believe me and wants a second opinion (i.e. yours). Could you please, therefore, confirm this is the case?

Thank you.

Best regards,
Mark

That is correct - but you should consider this to be a "second opinion". I don't work for Vonage, though I do use a soft phone account on a WiFi Phone. Again - so long as you are paying for the IP connection between you and Vonage and are not "asking" them to place an outbound PSTN call to a GSM number, there is no charge (from Vonage).

Of course, there would be a charge for the IP connection from Vodaphone, but I expect that you know that.

Hi,

Thanks again for your reply.

Do you use a 3G card and a laptop with Softphone on it and have you ever had any problems with Softphone when connected wirelessly to the internet?

Regards,
Mark

I have not used the soft phone via laptop and 3G card. I use a soft phone account on an "unlocked" F3000 WiFi phone which works fine.
