I have been reading the posts about Directv, but I have a few questions for the experienced guys just to do with the Direcdtv receiver. I have a Directv RCA receiver and Verizon POTS/DSL. I have been considering switching to Vonage for a while but am not sure it is the right thing to do. Can you give me some info on:
1. Will the Directv receiver work OK on vonage without any Tivo. And will the DSL work fine on the internet without interference from the VOnage, and vice versa. It is a deal killer if your phone service is interfered with by the internet activity which is consatnt here.
2. I moved to MA from NJ and do not want local channels from Boston or Red Sox games. I want the locals from the NYC/North Jersey area and the Yankees on the Yes network out of NYC which is in the Directv local package. I can use a friends address in NJ and order the vonage with a number from there. I do not want to try to get anything from Directv that they dont already offer and I pay for it all, but I am willing to give up the Boston stuff for the NJ stuff. Will Directv think the box is in NJ if the phone number and listed address is out of there?
3. If I go ahead with Vonage how do I order the DSL without POTS from Verizon. Is that a project too? Thanks for the help in advance. |

I'm not familiar with directv, but vonage charges NJ residents 6% sales tax, so just be aware. |

Thanks, I knew about the sales tax in NJ. But I really need to know the answers to the questions re. Directv receivers and their phone line connection that they use to set up the sports blackouts etc. Otherwise its not worth changing from the package deal I get from Verizon now. |

You can look thru the area code & prefix section on the Vonage website. You may select any combination you like. I live in Pa. and selected a Md. telephone number, there is no restriction. The problem you might have is, the receiver uses a standard dial-up modem, that appears not to work very well with the Vonage service. Search some of the older messages about Dish Network & DirecTV. |

I hear ya. Some of the posts say it works others say it doesnt. Some people say the phone service gets bad when the internet is being used at the same time. Vonage says Directv maybe works on their site, but says they do not support it ? I need to have the phone modem working in order to have the MLB Xtra Innings and the NHL Center Ice. If I knew for sure it would work I would switch to Vonage. Just waiting to hear something positive.
Tnx. |

I have seen some report that connecting the box through a DSL line filter helps with modem connections. I have also read that Vonage can adjust some parameter of your box to improve the modem compatibility. It does seem to be a gamble, though.
Unfortunately, with the call to DirecTV, you don't have the option of entering command prefixes such as *99 to put the adapter into "fax mode", which sometimes helps. |

I agree on the gamgle idea. Vonage seems like a great idea with all their features and rates but between all the problems you read about and horror shows with the service people keep bringing up here on the forums, added to the Directv issue I dont dare to sign up until it gets ready for prime time when all the issues are resolved. I guess it is only for people with Cable TV and internet. |
