These horror stories just seem to accumulate. I wonder what actually goes on in the dark halls of Vonage. I have a few nightmares myself. Perhaps things would change if Vonage had a serious competitor.

Vonage would have us believe that they are the customer-oriented friendly efficients, while the old phone company are the ancient dunces. Not necessarily true!

In my case, Vonage did not receive the authorization-to-switch-number fax properly. Once I resent it a week later, despite their protests that the first one was in the pipeline (it wasn't), they failed to get it in proper hands at my phone company, and then failed to follow-up when the customary time for the phone company's acknowledgement was not received. They've deleted-unread some of my email (yes, it's provable), and they've sent me absolutely cretinous form letters. They delay shipping the transfer requests out (from their transfer agent) until they have a bunch of them. They now have a trouble ticket on my transfer, but then sent me a form letter saying . . . well, nothing that made any sense.

I have called Customer Service several times, and on occasions reached people who do not know that existing numbers are transferred. When the call is then forwarded to others, I get in a phone cue leading to "we're too busy right now, try the Customer Service number again later."

I think that Vonage is probably growing without merit, and beyond the size of their capability to provide service. They deserve some bad publicity because they are not the white knights of the phone service world, they are the dunces.

These horror stories are no different than any CLEC. It's not unique to Vonage.

ATT CallVantage also uses Voip - slightly more expensive ($30 instead of $25), but a long history of customer service - with both positive and extremely negative reports from people who have been with ATT

Trust me and if you dont, check out the www.bbb.com site (better business bureau) you will see all the complaints for yourself.

I signed up with them and after spending hours upon hours of time on the phone with thier tech dept and my internet not working whenever the Vonage box was hooked up, it never worked. so obviously i cancelled by service and they lied to me, told me to call them for a return authorization number, so i could return the box to them. when i called them, i spoke to a rep and he said they do not want the box back and that i need to pay 40 dollars for it. i told them it does not work, why do i want a broken box? they said too bad, its in the fine print! although thier contract also states that the service will work great, but that end of the deal they could not keep up! so than i look at my credit card statement and they actually charged me 82.00 on top of the monthly charges i already incurred for a non working service! when i called them to find out why they charged 82 instead of 40 they made up some stupid charge that no one ever said anything about!! when i begged to talk to their superiors, they said there is none and when i asked for the phone number of the corporate office, they gave me the phone number for the technical dept just to get me off the phone! than they make you wait on hold for an hour just to call back!!
PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF THE HASSLE, go with a regular phone line for a few extra bucks!!!

Much of the delay with number transfer isn't the fault of Vonage, it's the fault of your local incumbent carrier. In my case, Verizon wanted to drag their feet and because Vonage is unregulated by the FCC they could.

In my case, the PUC took a dim view of Verizon's activities. I also told Verizon that if they didn't release my number I would file suit against them for costs incurred.

If they can transfer a number from a land line to a cell phone in 48 hours they sure as hell can transfer a land line to a land line. They all use the same database dips to find out where to route a call.

My argument btw is that Vonage uses FCC regulated switches to haul you onto the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). The carriers they use are Paetec and Focal both of which are FCC regulated.

The circuit switched phone companies are bleeding red ink because they're losing customers that are sick of being nickle and dimed to death. I always said that they stuck to the damned tariff for far too long, to their ultimate detriment.

There will come a day when circuit switched carriers are looked upon as a novelty.

you think thats bad. Vonage is worse when you transfer out. i went back to verizon after extensive service issues with Vonage. Vonage dragged their feet, charged me $39 per line disconnected (12 total) and as a parting shot, Voange customers are not able to call my company now. any Vonage customer that calls gets the standard "this number is no longer in service".

the punch line that this is... i did just that. they tell you exactly what you want to hear to get the service. i was told the i could activate fax lines and keep my fax numbers... not true.
i was told the the total of 12 lines i activated would have the 1500 min plan... again, not true and i got charged to change the plan.

i also read on the Vonage site that this is a month to month service and we could close our account any time... that was true, but after many service issues, i was charged $39/line to disconnect.
since we chagned our service back to Verizon, Vonage customers are no longer able to contact us.

Its Vonage. I have been over 1 year no transfer.

My cell number was told it can be transferred and then I got the message that my number was transferred. Much later I found out my cell phone was never changed, in fact my cell company was never notified. I called their corporate and found out they can can transfer in Vonage numbers and surely can transfer them out...they just need to hear the word.

I just got off of another 3-4 hours worth of on phone with Vonage people and being told nothing can be done but email Vonage. Email doesnt cut it. I'd like to know how many people are in this situation or got any results.
