I spent the last week or so trying to get my Netgear FVS318 setup properly with Vonage. It was a rather frustrating ordeal and I thought I would give a quick explanation of how I accomplished it so that some other poor soul doesn't have to waste a week of their life doing the same stuff I did.

First, I should mention that I use a lot of bandwidth. I connect to my home network via VPN and use it from my office(and vice versa). I also use Bit Torrent which is a total bandwidth hog.

My Requirements were pretty straight forward:
- QoS on the Vonage router
- VPN access
- Port forwarding capabilities

The router that Vonage initially sent me was the Motorola VT1005V.

The first configuration I tried was:
I put the FVS318 on the VT1005V's DMZ. This caused me to lose access to the Voip router(wonderful!). After a few more days of messing with the Motorola device, I decided to exchange it for the Linksys RT31P2. I think Motorola should stay out of the router business.

The second configuration I tried was:
I put the FVS318 on the RT31P2's DMZ. This worked well and port forwarding was working on the Netgear FVS318. The only issue was that the VPN still was not working. There are a bunch of VPN Pass-through settings on the RT31P2 and I had all of them enabled. I checked the Linksys RT31P2'S logs and noticed that when the VPN request was being made, port 500 was not getting through. This was a pit peculiar, considering that the FVS318 was on the DMZ. So I decided to experiment and I set the RT31P2 to forward port 500(IPSec) to the FVS318. Voila! I now have the exact configuration that I was looking for. I am able to use Bit Torrent without loss of sound quality, and I am able to VPN tunnel into my home network. I should mention that I am using SafeNet's Soft Remote for my VPN Client. I found an excellent tutorial on setting up the VPN but it seems to have been taken offline. Here's another tutorial:
Some things I recommend changing about this tutorial:
- I would use dynamic DNS.
- The Remote IPSec Identifier should be set to whatever IP your RT31P2 assigns to the FVS318)

- Vonage
- Netgear FVS318
- Linksys RT31P2
- SafeNet Soft Remote

Good luck and I hope this helps somebody out there!

Check my bad quality (Choppy) by DarrenJ post.

I had the same problems.

Unfortunatly new hardware is going to be you solution.

I to VPN and Terminal Serve into my servers at home.

Vonage routers do not allow this connection.

Hope it helps.

-To All,

I have Vonage w/ a FVS318 and a Motorola V1000.

I dont understand how people are having problems w/ the Motorola V1000 or the FVS318. My settings are just like this...

Suse 9.2 Pro Server (Linux)
CableModem-->FVS318-->------------------------> 3 PC's
Voip (Motorola)

My Linux Server, 3 Window XP Pro PC's and Voip box connects into my FVS318 box.

My Bandwidth with my cable provider is 5.4m/860k (download / upload)

I have all 5 running w/ FTP etc and I'll VPN into work and download Music w/ no problem. The only thing I did differently was I set a static IP on the Motorola V1000 Voip box and use that IP on the FVS318 as a DMZ. Also I set DNS Static w/ my Provider. For some reason the FVS318 has a problem w/ resolving DNS so I set it Static, and that unit comes on in less then 45sec.

If anyone needs help w/ the FVS318 or Suse 9.2 Professional Server setting it up w/ Vonage Voip w/ either DMZ or w/ the 2nd NIC in your server let me know.
