What order is best for best phone quality using a RT31P2 right now off a Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem. But, just bought a D-Link Dir-655 wireless router for my DELL Inspirion laptop. I currently have 2 computers with XP Pro networked and sharing a printer. Right now everything is Ethernet cabled.

So my question is what is the best way to connect the routers? Or as I think I read on the D-Link box that Vonage phone service CAN BE enabled in Firewall settings>Port Templates>VOIP Controls>O K .

Do I even need the Linksys router?
Peace.

I'm not 100% certain what you're asking. The DIR-655 is a great wireless router. However, you still need some type of Vonage phone adapter -- i.e., the DIR-655 can provide preference to Vonage/VOIP traffic, but does not serve as a substitute for a Vonage adapter. You'll still need something, either the Linksys you describe, or something like the little D-Link box that Vonage sells.

Miked2, so I can use the RT31P2, good, but will it work best if it's (the RT31P2) plugged into the LAN plugs on the back of the D-Link or should I plug the D-Link into one of the LAN outlets on the back of the Linksys? I have 2 desktop computers wired and networked to the Linksys RT31P2. I just want the best phone for the home and wireless data to a Laptop that I can figure.

You would want to plug the Linksys into the DIR-655 to get the maximum benefits of the DIR-655.

So:

Cable modem-> DIR-655 -> Linksys

All your other computers should plug into the DIR-655, too. You are essentially using the Linksys just as a phone adapter, and not for its routing functionality.

a different opinion here: the linksys Vonage device should connect directly to your modem then your DLink wireless after that: this is what will give you best phone service; special-ordered router/TAs like the ones linksys makes for Vonage do not always deliver the best quality voice on the backside of a third party wireless router (and dare I say anything singling out DLink?--no, I think I won't): stick to modem->vonage and then whatever network you like after that or it's a sure bet you'll end up calling Vonage customer service within the next few months and the first thing they'll ask you to do is connect the linksys directly to the modem Eek

jrshore, you may be right, and I can always go back and try a different way, but What I did was Modem>D-Link Dir-655>D-Link VTR.Phone. So far thats been fine. As an aside the D-Link 655 installed smooth as any hardware I've ever installed. I really like the NetWork Magic software interface too. It certainly educates people like myself without any background.
I will forsure post back any adverse results when and if thet bump-up on my computing experience.

I have a DIR-655 and have it plugged into my cable modem. It works fine for me. SB5120->DIR-655->RTP300. Besides if you plug the Vonage adapter into the cable modem, then you won't be taking advantage of the QOS provided by the DIR-655.
