Post subject: Going from wired router to wireless
Hi all,
I'm currently using the RT31P2 with one computer connected, along with my phone. However, I want to add wireless to my setup, as I'm soon going to have a second laptop, as well as a Wii, that I'd like to have connect to the internet wirelessly. Once I set this up, I'll have the first computer connect wirelessly too. In any event, I've been reading about the various wireless routers w/

, and it seems that they all pretty much suck, and that I'd be much better off getting either a Wireless Access Point to go behind the RT31P2, or a Wireless Router to go in front of it. My question is, which one works best? Obviously I'd like to have the best possible voice/sound quality on my phone -- will one setup do that better than the other? Thanks for the help.

The Motorola VT2542 has gotten a favorable review from this website:
http://www.hardwaregeeks.com/articles.php?action=show&showarticle=521
However, I am having a hard time find the device to make the purchase.

won't sell it to me, they tell me to check the local retail stores, but my local retail stores aren't selling it. If you can find this for sale, let me know where you get it.
Good luck going wireless.

I am using the Motorola SB5120 cable modem and the Motorola VT2542 wireless router. I use both my laptop and desktop wirelessly. I have had the VT2542 for about a month, with no problems. Phone quality is great! My fax line seems to work more consistently. Signal is no problem either. Prior to the VT2542, I was using the Linksys WRTP54G wireless router. With the Linksys WRTP54G, phone quality was great, but the signal seemed to be frequently in and out and I had difficulty sending/receiving faxes on a consistent basis.

the motorola isn't available in Canada so that is why I went with the Linksys. My other Linksys was having the problem of losing the wireless connection, but so far so good.

I had a hard time getting the Motorola VT2542 as a replacement when I called technical support. I was also told to get it from a retail store, which was not possible. I then called customer service and offered to pay for it instead of getting it as a replacement. The representative gave me the option of paying the difference in cost of the router that I had and the VT2542, which was $20. In this forum, I have read that others had problems getting the VT2542. On the other hand, I read in this forum that some customers had absolutely no problems getting the VT2542. I guess it all depends on the representative you're working with. Perhaps you can try customer service one more time.

I hadn't read about the VT2542, but that one does sound much better than the other options (the WRT54GP2, for instance, has horrendous reviews on amazon). Anyway, I'll try calling up and seeing if I can pay $20 to replace what I have now. That would certainly be easier than buying a whole new router/access point. Thanks all.

I took the advise of the Forum and continued to call
Vonage
Customer Care until someone could help. Finally, today, after 39 minutes on the phone,
Vonage
is sending me the VT2542. It probably took a dozen different calls, all ending with "go shop your local retail store" before this person actually listened to me and figured out how to send me the device. I paid full price, $99.99, but I'm just happy to have the device being sent to me. Let's just hope that the correct device makes it to me and it works.
