PostPosted: Sat Apr 21, 2007 3:42 pm    Post subject: Simulring Caller ID Error to Cellphone Reply with quote Back to top

Hello,

I have incoming calls set to Simulring my desk phone and also to 2 different T-Mobile cellphones.

The deskphone is connected directly to the Vonage Motorola box. The deskphone displays the caller id number properly.

My problem is that both cellphones display an additional "01" or "+" sign before the number from any calls forwarded from Vonage. This causes problems with the phone book and number redial.

The plus sign usually means overseas or 011 ... Sometimes it comes through with a "+" sometimes with a "01" without regard to being international or within US originated call.

When a US call comes in with the "+" sign in front of the number the complete 10 digit number is displayed. (i.e. "+2101234567")

However, whenever the "01" is displayed in front of the US number the last 2 digits of the complete phone number are cut off. (i.e. "0121012345")

This error only occurs when calls from Vonage are forwarded or SimulRing to 1 or both cellphones.

Our cellphone receive calls from all over the world, caller ID either works flawlessly or caller id doesn't work at all. (However, with calls that pass through the Vonage system it seems that caller id is somewhere between funtional and disfunctional.) The caller ID field on the cellphones is capable of displaying atleast 12 digits.

Through searching on this forum, I have seen a lot a different inconsistencies with caller id and no clear cut fix or problem that I can determine... "things" seem to happen eventually with enough persistence.

Is there anything I can do or any magic words to tell customer service?

Thanks for any help.

Sad to tell you there is nothing customer service can do for you regarding that matter ! Sad
Vonage caller ID only shows what have been sent from the carrier of the person who is calling you !

Well, I might buy into that argument if that same caller were to call my cellphone directly and the same caller id error were to show up on my cellphone. But, nope, this caller id error only occurs when the calls come through the Vonage system. (Either call forwarded or Simulring.)

That tells me that Vonage is somehow contributing to the error.

Thanks, I wish I knew for sure. T-Mobile says it's Vonage, Vonage says it's T-Mobile.

It's not worth it for me to spend hours on the phone with low level tech support or customer service to convince either vendor that they have a problem, so I need to get it resolved without spending too much time on it. (Life's too short.)

I selected Vonage specifically for the Simulring feature, the line is a business line, but not an advertised number. If simulring doesn't perform like I need it too, (i.e. caller id to work properly with all forwarded phones) I'll just move on to another provider.

I hope someone has a special contact or magic words to tell whoever will listen that something just isn't quite right here.

Just playing around and found another clue to this puzzle.

If I unplug the phone adapter and call my Vonage number the call rings through to my fail over number. If I have the landline as the failover number, the caller id is diplayed correctly.

If I have the T-Mobile cellphone set as the failover number then the caller id is wrong. (Begins with the "01" and cuts off the last 2 digits.)

However, if I call the cellphone directly, the caller id is displayed properly on the cellphone.

Bottom line, if an incoming call goes through the Vonage system and arrives at my T-Mobile cellphone, the caller id will display improperly.

That tells me that Vonage is doing "something wrong" to change what is going to the T-Mobile system. This, I guess, as any inconsistencies in service are quite annoying. Does anyone have any suggestions? Preferably a fix.

Well, I do have a virtual number from Mexico attached to the Vonage number. Is that what you mean?

I am having problems with cingular in the same way you described. Anytime calls get forwarded thru Vonage the caller id is behaving weird.

This problem started on Cincinnati bell i-wireless phones about 4 months ago all of a sudden all calls forwarded thru Vonage came up private. My solution was to switch wireless providers to cingular.

then about 5 weeks ago calls forwarded thru Vonage came up on my cingular phone with the last 2 digits cut off 80% of the time, other times it comes up out of area, and sometimes in the usual way it always worked with the + sign in front of the number.

examples
0151355512 80%
+8595551212 15%
Call 5%

Obviously most people forward calls to cell phones from land lines and Vonage lines. This means that Vonage has big problems at the moment as far as forwarding goes. I have sent in a message to repair today, hoping that they would fix the problem. I have business lines thru Vonage. I am a happy customer but this problem is a deal buster. Without being able to leave the office and still having access to caller id from customers. I can't continue much longer with Vonage. Out of fairness to Vonage I will wait until I get a reply from customer service and post it here. I can't imagine others are not having the same problem. Does anyone know how to resolve it. I have also thought it is my cell phones, I use nokia and motorola, I tested 3 different ones and have the same problem. I would switch to a blackberry it that would help. Is everyone else having this problem? Is anyone still receiving caller id information correctly when calls are transfered thru Vonage?

Yeah, apparantly it has to do with the carrier that actually owns/switches the phone number that you get from Vonage.

Follow this thread for what I found to be sort of a work around.
http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic19414.html

In my case, since our landline is forwarded out to simulring our sales team we don't care what our Vonage number is. We lucked out getting a different number out of New Jersey with a carrier that doesn't mix things up like Level 3 does.
