Is there a way to automatically recieve faxes with a fax machin. I can send/receive faxes just fine with the Vonage service. But I only can recieve faxes manually. When a fax call comes in I have to pick up the phone and dial 1-2-3 then hang it up once I hear the fax toones. It recieves it just fine. But I would rather have it automatically recieve them. The manual says that i would have to do this if there is voice messnegaging system (which Vonage has) without distintive dial tone. Any Ideas. Thanks in advance.

Distinctive Ring is the only way I know to set up the voice/fax sharing a line. If you have a fax machine that has an answering machine in it, of course you can override the voice mail for that line and then instruct the callers to activate the fax.

I've not been able to come up with a way to leave it on auto answering, though.

I wonder if a box I have will help. When the phone rings
the box listens for the fax tones. If fax, the call is routed to
the fax machine, if no tone, then it rings the separate telephone attached?

I just did a quick google search and if it's one with CNG, which listens for the fax tones and sends to the fax, it may work. The one I found was about $90. I might end up buying one. Let me know if yours successfully distiinguishes voice from fax.

I thought my fax machine would eavesdrop for CNG tones, but I can't find a setting for it. Maybe it was another machine I had before.

good luck,

Laurel

I have one of these I no longer use, a Command Communications 7500. Send me a PM if you're interested. I was going to eBay it soon.

Firefly:

thanks. That one says it uses distinctive ring, though, I think? I don't get too many incoming faxes so it's more an annoyance for me than anything. If I knew it would work, I would probably do it.

It can do distinctive ring, fax tone, or a command (such as #1) entered by the caller to switch to the fax output. It also is two-line capable. Lots of programming options - probably overkill for most people, but at the time, it was the only box I could find that did what I wanted. I paid around $100 for it, I will sell for $40, which I think is less than a simple fax-tone switch goes for.

thanks, firefly. we're moving in two weeks and i've promised my husband i will not buy anything or drag anything else home until after then. don't hold it up on my account -- toss it on ebay. I may or may not do anything about it. Since I have an efax account, it's easy for me to receive faxes that way and I mainly use mine for sending out. I have the efax number on my voice message if people are trying to fax and i'm not home.

thanks, though!
