PostPosted: Wed Nov 10, 2004 10:50 am    Post subject: simulring & cell phone loop issue Reply with quote Back to top

Hey folks,

I have dropped my landline in favor of a Vonage line and use simulring to a cell phone to ensure I don't miss any calls while away. However, when I use this same cell phone to call the Vonage line, the cell phone gets a busy signal after one ring and the Vonage line continuously rings until voicemail picks-up, which then records a blank message until the maximum alotted time is filled up with dead air. It's as though the call gets stuck in a loop at the cell end while the Vonage line is left open outside this loop. This odd behavior started about a month ago and prior to this, I had no problems calling my Vonage line from this same cell phone.

Thinking it might be the cell phone itself, I tried it with a friend's cell phone on a different carrier and have the same issue. I also tried disabling simulring and instead configured my Vonage account to first ring for X seconds before forwarding to the cell, then X+Y seconds to voicemail if neither device picked-up. However, the same looped call occurs at the cell end when the call gets forwarded to this same cell.

Surely people have both a cell phone and a Vonage line, use the latter's simulring to have the cell ring at the same time, but still wish to make calls from this same cell to the Vonage line!

Ideas? I called Vonage to get this resolved and they have merely opened a ticket. I'm not hopeful that this is something that will and should be promptly fixed, especially since what I want to do worked in the past.

Don't expect this issue to be resolved, it would most likely require a software rewrite that makes an exception (if call is from X number, then don't ring Y number simultaneously). Any exception like this would probably significantly increase the wait time before a call is put through because it'd have to access a database first.

Logically, that is the only way this could work because your cell phone is tricked into thinking you are calling your own cell number. On all phone systems, if you call your own number it would either be 1) be busy, 2) go directly to voicemail, or 3) beep you on call waiting and eventually go to voicemail.

I also have my cell ring at the same time as my Vonage number. I have the number of rings to voice mail set so that if neither is answered, the Vonage voice mail will pick up before the cell phone voicemail will. If I set the Vonage number to ring first and then ring the cell, all calls that I didn't answer go to my cell phone voicemail.

When I use my cell phone to call home, it rings once and then immediately goes into my cell voice mail. If someone is home at my house, they know from the caller ID that it was me, and they call me back. That's been working ok for me.

A friend and I thought that a work-around might be to get a virtual number for the additional $4.99 a month and use that number to call home. Neither of use have tried it - maybe someone here with a virtual number can test this.

I think in order to stop the problem of getting the busy signal and having your Vonage voicemail record silence, you will need to activate call waiting and/or voicemail on your cell phone.

Another huge issue with this is that if my cell phone is turned off, all my calls go immediately to Vonage voicemail without even ringing, this might just be a problem with my cell carrier (T-Mobile), but you might want to check that too - I suppose the same thing would happen if the cell phone was brought into a no-service area. If you don't have call waiting active on your cell and you're talking on it, it's possible that the person calling you would either get a busy signal or go straight to Vonage voicemail. I doubt the Vonage number rings.

Hope this makes sense, I'm frustrated too.

I hadn't even thought of that issue. As it turns out, I don't have call waiting or voicemail with my cell carrier. So, if I were using my cell phone and received a call on the Vonage line, that caller would be immediately sent to Vonage voicemail then and the Vonage line wouldn't even ring? I'll have to try that, but if this is the case, there really should be a re-write of this simulring implementation.

Hi Dave,

Yes, that's what might happen if you don't have call waiting on your cell, so you should test it - I think it's possible that calls to your Vonage number might get a busy signal rather than Vonage voicemail if your cell is off, out of area, or you're on it (a worse problem).

I just got off the phone with a tier3 technical support engineer and was told that what we want worked in the past (~2 months ago) because at that time they did have their servers configured to permit this. Unfortunately, they had to roll back to a previous implementation to fix a number of other issues and in so doing, we lost the ability to call our Vonage lines from another line (cell, landline, etc.) which is itself configured to receive the simul-ring. He couldn't give me a ETA for the fix, but I guess we better not hold our breaths.

That's good news if it's true, but I don't think it's worked since I switched to Vonage (April 2004).

Maybe they had a few servers running that allowed it and switched people if they complained. I don't think all their servers are configured the same.
