ive referred my friend and now currently has Vonage. he ported out 1 of his Vonage numbers, which was from other phone provider, to comcast. then he received an email from comcast stating that Vonage is not releasing that number and thats the reason why the transfer cant be completed. so he called Vonage but was informed that it isn't true..that Vonage is not holding any numbers and that customers can port out their number if they want to.
whats the real deal?

I'm actually bringing one of my family's numbers to Comcast from Vonage too.

It boils down to the carrier of the number. Vonage partners with local exchange carriers depending on their territories all over the country - these are the "little guys" that band together against the "big guys" like Verizon, BellSouth, etc.

So, Vonage really can't "hold" a number as it's handled by an intermediary. I had this same issue.

Comcast told me my number is currently owned by Focal Broadcomm, and there is a 10 business day wait, so I had to reschedule my installation.

Now, if it's something about a name or address mismatch (which I had when I brought the number TO Vonage in the first place), that's simply a problem with regards to the security and authorization for Comcast getting permission to move the number.

I'm keeping the other numbers with Vonage, it just so happened that a family member is losing money by not participating in one of those triple bundles.

So, rest of the lines staying with the big V Smile

so it is comcasts responsibilty for the transfer number right? or is it also possible that they cant get the number?
whats Vonage role in this case?

The only reason Comcast wouldn't be able to port a number would be the same reasons you wouldnt've have been able to bring the number in:

Name or Address doesn't match on your transfer request
Number is already disconnected
You have DSL or some other special feature on the line (this shouldn't be an issue because you have Vonage)

Features? Are you talking about Vonage features nice gurl? I don't think there is any Vonage feature that would hinder the transfer or porting out of a number to & from any other company. Although, make sure to disable call forwarding first before you port it out as it could be forwarding to a number that you don't use or have anymore. Aside from the address and correct info I see no reason why your number couldn't be ported in/out unless of course it's on a freeze mode. Wink

As far as I know from glancing at other Voip websites, it's features like DSL, Distinctive Ring, ISDN, or a freeze on the line.

The only thing that really would apply is a freeze on the line so your number can't get "slammed" by another carrier, but... I don't really know how that'll work because of it being Voip, not even sure if you can put a freeze on a Voip number.
