O.K., Vonage says the adapter is mine to keep after my year is up, but they won't unlock it then. They want me to pass it on to someone else who may want Vonage.

That means I will end up essentially throwing it away or keepng it as a paperweight and having to purchase another router to use with the next Voip service!

Bull Crap!

Does anyone know how to unlock a Motorola 2442?

Not sure what you have planned for the unit. I do believe Voip companies all have their own adapters. You can still use it as a router, so it isn't really a paper weight.

You don't understand.

I don't want to buy the next Voip provider's
adapter if I can use the Vonage adapter.

I already have another router.

All Voip companies do have their own adapters, most made by the SAME companies that make the Vonage routers.

Some other Voip providers WILL let you use the router you were using with Vonage, if it's unlocked.

I didn't misunderstand, I haven't heard of any Voip companies that let you use another companies adapter. What companies allow you do to this?

ViaTalk said I ould save money by using the Vonage adapter IF it is unlocked.

It is part of their BYOD (bring your own device).

All I'm gonna say is you need to try the search function here. No offense intended at all to the original poster, but I for one am SICK of answering this damn question.

Bottom line: No, you can't. Don't ask here. There are forums that talk about DSL, cable, Reports, and such that may be able to assist you.

The Voip market, at least Vonage's little slice of Voip heaven, is kinda like the cell phone market. Most providers will give you a device for free, or for a low cost, but they are paying for that device and (frankly) they don't want to see you walk off their contract and use their hardware on a competitor's network.

I can't take my perfectly good Nokia GSM cell phone from the old AT&T Wireless and use it on my GSM Cingular "Go!" Phone. I can throw it away or use it as a paperweight, or find aftermarket ways to unlock it. But any other cell company I might choose won't want to deal with the device. It's cheaper and easier for them to give me a new phone.

Since Vonage was the "market starter", they (IMHO wisely) chose to lock their devices down. Otherwise, they'd have competitors crawling out of the woodwork encouraging you to pay the $40 disconnect fee and go to their service, with hardware that Vonage paid for...

Well, if you are sick of answering this question, don't answer it.

I am sick of people jumping in with comments that essentially say, "I don't know".

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, however, even if you find another Vonage customer to pass it to, Vonage will not transfer the device as it violates their terms of service. The device must come from an authorized Vonage retailer.
