If you want to take advantage of the new Powerboost burst speed that Comcast is providing, you will need to purchase a new cable modem or rent a new one from Comcast. I use the Motorola SB5120 and it works great for my setup but I don't think they no longer produce the SB5120...It was replaced by the SB5101. Another choice you may also want to consider is the Linksys BEFCUM10 cable modem.

Darrell I never seen the power boost happen when I'm downloading or uploading and I did the reboot, wonder if its because my modem is the SB5100. Been too busy to check it out with Comcast so I wanted to toss this question out there first instead. Wink

The SB5100 is fully capable of the Powerboost burst...maybe you have the wrong configuration file for your modem or your account just needs to be rebuilt to enable the Powerboost. I would contact Comcast's Customer Service and inform them that you are not getting the download or the upload Powerboost.

BTW, Is Verizon's Fios high speed internet available in your area?

I wish FIOS was available. Not only is it faster than Comcast, it's cheaper too. Rumor has it they laid the fiber backbone, but they didn't set up the connections to actually bring it to my neighborhood just yet Sad

Thanks for responding Darrell. Guess I will have to contact C.S. Confused
I just checked into the Verizon's Fios and its not in my area yet. Do you have it? If so how do you like it?

No, FIOS is not in my area (Tennessee). The reason I asked if FIOS was in your area, is that I saw you were from the NorthEast and it has been deployed more readily there than here in the South.

I found a thread on another board in regards to Comcast's Powerboost and what markets are currently seeing this new burst of speed. http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,17991756~start=0

I've never observed Powerboost here in SE PA either. I guess I could call Comcast CS as well, but I'm just not sure I could get myself sufficiently motivated to do something like that Wink.

About 6 months ago when I first started getting the spikes I guess they hadn't worked all the kinks out of the technology because I was getting sustained downloads of 1000+ KB/s. Now it spikes, but settles out at about 770 KB/s. Bummer.

I could be wrong, and I guess I am considering it's still around, but I thought I heard Comcrap was getting rid of Powerboost because it really didn't work and customers were complaining about issues with it. I dunno, I could've dreamt it.
