You have to get the firmware upgrade done by from Vonage tech support.

I've decided to keep the VWR until the Motorola VT2542 is available in Canada or until I can find a suitable alternative.

Can anyone suggest a very robust wired/wireless solution that will allow true QOS and port-forwarding that will let me use RDP? I want the best of each of a phone adaptor, router, and wireless access point.

I asked the customer support rep if they received a lot of calls about the VWR and he laughed!

Top-level tech support also had no idea why Remote Desktop (RDP) was not working, and wasn't able to offer me ANY help.

In general, running a non-Vonage router seems to work best. Vonage makes good adapters, but the routers they "attach" to them are, in my experience, barely adequate as routers.

My personal favorite, though by no means based on anything but my own two years with one, is the Linksys WRT54GL. This is a Linux-based router that can take aftermarket firmware, and once you add that aftermarket stuff, they are really impressive routers.

Remote Desktop may be using GRE packets, and if so it is a "known issue" that a number of Vonage routers are poor at forwarding GRE packets (quite a few issues have been raised with people trying to run VPNs from within a Vonage router's network).

However, you may also want to look in your configuration. My WRTP54G (Vonage Linksys router) has settings for several VPN types, and it may work. Also, try putting the machine running Remote Desktop in the DMZ. This will cause all unsolicited packets to automatically go to that machine, which may make it work.

If you go the DMZ route, just be sure to have a software firewall running on that machine, because DMZ means all the protection you had from the router is negated.

I'm currently running a Linux box with SSH and SSH-tunneled VNC as a "remote control" box, and my WRT54GL running "Tomato" firmware has no problems at all with it.

I agree with Nate. Get a router that's just a router from someone other than Vonage. D-link, Netgear, Linksys etc.

Then get a separate phone adapter that's just a phone adapter. The one Vonage is "pushing" right now is a d-line VTA which has worked fine for me so far.

PS - I'm also a proponent of getting a separate wireless access point that's just an access point and installing it behind the router instead of getting a "wireless router" combo.
