Post subject: Good news/Bad news transaction with Vonage
After enjoying my nearly 3-year ride with
Vonage
, at least until recent outages caused some grief, I decided to migrate back to AT&T landline service. That's the "bad news" in this post.
Good news: number ported in 11 days with absolutely no hassles. Today I canceled that number on my account (I still have a fax and limited line subbed until my account cycles in mid-May). I called Customer Care around 2pm EDT and completed the whole business by 2:20 pm EDT. The CSR read all of the prompts on her script to keep my service, but never blinked at all my "no" responses.
When I cancel my other two lines in early May, I will have one of the older Motorola phone adapters - the square black box without the router builtin - which I will be happy to send to a new home if one of the forum members is interested in it. It won't be free, but we'll both come away happy with our deal. And I'm not sure that it can be used with any other number, but I recall that some folks like these devices since they don't have the router.

I believe the device can be used with a different number as long as it is still active. just call customer service for that and they will assist you with regards to the new number that will be assigned to that device.
though its sad to know that you switch to at&t

It CAN be used with another number. Whom ever you give the box to will just have to pay $29.99 to "reactivate" the box. The bad thing is,
Vonage
actually charges $34.95 to the credit card and credit $9.98 to the
Vonage
account.
I just recently "resigned" back up with
Vonage
with the equipment I used before. I had to disconnect my service when I moved because we had some problems getting internet. Now I have it back and I've had nothing but problems, so I dont blame you for going to at&t; however, I feel SOOOOOOOOO sorry for you when you about have a heart attack when you get your first bill. My first bill from windstream when I moved was $297 that was for Local and unlimited longdistance and all the "setup" fees. I was extremely unhappy because when I set up service I was told it was only going to be my first months service (49.99) and a $80 set up fee, and then I get a 297 bill with all these other fees.
my second bill with windstream was $197 for yet again, more "setup" fees that they had to do.
needless to say I lit a fire under the cable co's butt to get my wiring done. LOL and I'm back on
Vonage
, not without problems though, might I add.

Well, First, My service kept going in and out for about 4 days. the calls would just "drop" in the middle of a conversation. I was not having problems with my internet.
Then, this past weekend, I went several hours saturday without service, as well as several hours on a few different days last week.
Now, I'm having a problem with receiving calls from people within my area code.
I can receive calls from anyone that is NOT in my area code, but I can't receive calls from people within my area code. I have contacted
Vonage
on the issue, they have a work order in; however they said it is most likely that I will end up having to change my phone number because there is possibly just a problem with this phone number
It would be a major hassle to have to do that, but I will if I need to.
I know that
Vonage
is going through this court thing, so I don't expect service to be perfect right now; however, after have been with them for 2 years previously, I had NO problems before.
So, I'm hoping that this recent work order is something that can be fixed, because it is important to be able to receive phone calls from people within my area code, moreso than people outside of it because of my husbands disability. I also have a family member whom is very ill in the hospital and can pass at any time, and not being able to receive word is a major hassle.
I keep having to call the hospital or drive down there to see what is going on. Not easy to do when working 12 hour shifts.
I am truely hoping that these issues I'm having get fixed because I love
Vonage
, and the service was always wonderful before!

Melisam78 I don't know what your number has to do with you not being able to receive local calls but then a
Vonage
rep told you it could be with the phone number that you have? Why would the rep say that? Did you tried porting out this number and ported it back to
Vonage
? Is yes, do not have your number changed yet unless you are sure. Try this for experiment. Call
Vonage
ask them to add you a Virtual number and get a virtual number for your area code (give your town & state). You could actually add a virtual number without calling
Vonage
but by simply logging in your web account. The reason you are to call is so you won't be charge with any fees. There would be a one time activation fee but if you call them you could ask them to waive it for you on the first time and tell them you have been having problems. I'm sure they will understand & will overlook this for first timers. If they have added it already, ask the rep what is your virtual number then ask someone-a friend perhaps to call you on that virtual number (this friend of yours should be on your local area code). See if you will be able to receive the calls in your main line (all calls from virtual number would be forwarded to your main line). If this works, keep the virtual number if it doesn't get rid of it.
As for removing virtual number, you don't need to call
Vonage
to have it removed should it not work, just go to your web account. On features, click on Manage Virtual Number. Click "view" then either "edit" or "remove" the said number.
remove the virtual if it doesnt work, if it does keep it it would only be $4.99/month anyway.

Hello again.
We tried the virtual number and it did not work. They did not charge me to do it. I had it for two days and no calls were being forwarded to my main line.
So, that was not a fix.
They told me this morning it would be about 48 hours and they gave me a case number to call back with to check, but my friend is going to keep calling from her cell every so often to see if it goes through.
eventually it will get fixed or I'll just change my number, one way or another I'll end up receiving local calls. LOL

haha!!
you bet your sweet hide I'll ask for a month of free service. It would be a HUGE inconvinience if we have to change our number.
the least they could do is give me a month of free service. LOL
the guy that I talked to said most likely I will end up having to change my number... I am hoping with lots of lucky pennies that doesn't happen. haha
