Tried turning the 8885-2 answer machine off and called my Vonage number, kicked me over to voice mail (got to change the default message) and it didn't light up the message waiting light on the phone. I'm curious how earlier models are able to do this?

Because the other models don't have a built-in answering machine and are responding to the signal from the telco or Vonage adapter. The 8885 message waiting only works with the built-in answering machine.

I love the design of the TRU8865, but have had no end of trouble getting it to work in my environment.

I bought the one with 2 handsets at Costco back in January. It was fine for 2 weeks then, when I went to put the handset back in the cradle, the display went blank and the "Welcome" screen came on. The handset discharged down to 1 bar of power. It did this a few more times so I returned it for another unit, hoping it was just a bad one (after a few calls to Uniden). Brought home the second unit, and it started doing the same thing a few days later. Brought that one back.

Then I went to a completely different retailer, again hoping that the Costco ones were simply a bad batch, or refurbs or something. It was fine for 4 days (I bought the one with 1 handset), then this morning it did the same thing again - except this time when I put the handset back into the cradle the LCD display showed a bunch of vertical lines, then the welcome screen and down to one bar of power.

I am using it im my office along with a Macintosh G5 computer and an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. I've now plugged it into a different outlet as I've run out of ideas as to why it keeps doing this. If it were something to do with the PAP2 I would expect problems to be random, but it only happens when I put the handset back into the cradle. I read scores of reports of others using these phones with their Vonage service, computers, wireless, etc ...

Does anyone have ANY suggestions as to why it keeps doing this? At this point I doubt very much if it's the phone, but rather something in my work environment.

Help!

My 8885-2 had one handset that did something similar. It wouldn't charge, the charge lamp on the stand would go out after a while, and the phone ran down on power and would not charge up again. Take the batteries out, put them back in, and it would charge again. Switched batts in phones, phones in the stands, nothing helped. Called Uniden to RMA it, and suddenly the thing started working, and has ever since. Weird.

I tried that too. Nada.

Right now I have an extension cord going into another room hoping it has something to do with the AC circuit, as I have just about every electronic appliance running in my office.

I just picked up the two sets of the TRU8860-2 (four handsets in total) from Costco hoping that I could de-register one of the pairs so that all four could work off one base. It worked!!!

My biggest concern was that the second "main" base would conflict with the first and that everytime that I placed a handset on the second main base, that it would clear the registration against the other. Not so. Since you have to purposely deregister a handset unit, it doesn't matter that you are using the second main base as a charger unit.

All in all, I got a four handset "kit" for 140 altogether (each pair was 69.99 at Costco) and it is working like a charm. There were other three handset units for that price, without having to go through the "trouble" of testing this out, but I didn't care for the built in digital answering machines that I wouldn't be using anyway. This homemade four handset unit is better suited for Vonage service (e.g., Voice Mail indicator), plus it gives me that extra handset that I can use.

Thanks arawakan!,

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the 8860 on sale for 49.99 at staples. I'm glad that works, b/c its a lot cheaper to just buy two main units than to buy 2 extra handsets.

you rock!

I use the 8866, the two line model and love it...I can't say anything bad about it.

Is it possible to mix and match the 8860 and 8885 models so that you can have the option of message indicator for the answering machine on two of the phone and a message indicator for the voicemail on the other two phones? Not ideal but if you're like me and want to switch off between the two from time to time that might be an interesting solution.
