VPN Problems: Motorola SB5120 cable modem &Linksys WRTP5

I have cable modem service through Time Warner here in Dallas, TX. I have a Motorola SB5120 cable modem provided by time warner and a Linksys WRTP54G Voip router that I just bought. I have to VPN to work (IBM). When I connect directly to the cable modem, the VPN works fine. When I put the router inbetween, VPN no longer works. Go back to cable modem directly and VPN works again. Same thing happened when I used a VTech IP8100 cordless phone Voip router/adapter. No VPN if that was in line as a router. Am I the only one with this problem?

No, you're not the only one with this problem in regard to the WRTP54G and VPN. Until Vonage/Linksys provides a firmware update for The WRTP54G that addresses the VPN issue, you're not going to be able to connect to the VPN...This has been my personal experience.

Just in case, have you enabled all the VPN passthroughs on the WRTP54G?

Under SECURITY, there is a VPN PASSTHROUGH section. Enable the VPN type you are using, or enable all of them, and see if that helps.

Most of the reported problems involve accessing a VPN behind the WRTP54G/RTP300 from the Internet - in other words people have trouble running a VPN from inside their WRTP54G network.

I worked for IBM (contract) for three years, and connected to their VPN through my WRTP54G on occasion. Usually I used their SOCKS firewall, but I do use a similar GlobalConnect VPN today to connect to my current contract (an IBM spinoff that uses similar software), and the VPN access works fine.
