PostPosted: Mon Apr 16, 2007 12:32 pm    Post subject: How to get a new telephone adapter? Reply with quote Back to top

My existing telephone adapter (Linksys RT31P2) seesm to getting flakey. How does one get a new adapter? Must I purchase through Vonage? Can I purchase elswhere? If so, how does Vonage know that the new box is there? Finally, any recommendations? I need a TA/router combo. It will sit directly behind a Motorola SURFboard SB5120 cable modem (and with an Airport Extreme connected to the TA/router).

Many thanks!

Is your adapter still in return period? If yes, have it exchanged with a new one. As long as you send your old one Vonage would not charge you with the new one they would be sending. If you upgrade, you will only be paying the excess fee or upgrade fee.

Speak first to a tech support (tier1 if it's your first time to ask for tech assistance) before having your current adapter replaced and here their commendation/s.

If you have really decided you want to buy a new adapter from a retailer. Call Vonage so they are aware you'll be using a new one and so they could configure it on your set-up or as what they call it "Retail Move Line".

No. I got it originally in March 2005.

Thanks for your comments.

Places such as Best Buy and Circuit City usually have Vonage branded devices. Just search on bestbuy.com and circuitcity.com for "Vonage". There might be other places as well but I'm unsure as to what other retailer has them.

Let it be known though that not all Voip devices work with Vonage, so you have to purchase one that actually works with it. (Which is why I suggested a search of "Vonage" on a retailer's website.

If you decide to go the retail route, you can add the device to your account, and switch your number to the new device ONLINE by going to: http://www.vonage.com/retail_subscribe/ , click on "Current Customer Login" and go from there. It's a very easy process with much less chance of the foreign customer service reps. messing it up because they couldn't understand you or vice-versa. Good luck!

My Linksys RTP300 adapter went bad (AC adapter died -- weird), so I bought a new D-Link VTA at Circuit City. Activating the new box online at www.vonage.com/activate was painless and worked immediately after plugging the new VTA in. On the Vonage activation web page, you log in as an existing customer. After entering the MAC address off the new adapter, you select your existing phone number off the old box to transfer.
The new VTA downloaded new firmware and rebooted shortly after plugging in -- works great.

I called tech support, they diagnosed that the DHCP server portion of my linksys had died. They sent a free replacement even though the unit was 2.5 years old. That was nice.

My only complaint was they would not overnight the shipment (even if I paid) which caused a three-day phone outage until the replacement arrived.

jjpslc, only their Sales Dept has the option how to send a device to a customer--with options from overnight to standard shipping. As for Free devices sent by tech support they are only allowed to send it in standard shipping as its simply a replacement and since of course its FREE. Anyway, good thing they didnt charge you for the device. For most customer who calls and has an old device(more than 1yr) they usually inform the customer that he would be charged. You still got a good deal. Smile
