Hey all,

I have the dreaded WRTP54G Router with the latest firmware (1.00.62). For the last month or so, when I try to login into the router, it's either extremely slooooow, or just times out. I've reset it, unplugged it, set all my browser settings to allow it, etc and it just doesn't help. Is there something wrong with it, or is it just a piece of garbage like everyone else says it is.

Thanks
Mark

I have one wired connection and two wireless connections in this setup. I started out with an RTP300 plugged into a D-Link DI-624 which, after an initial shakedown, worked fine. In order to eliminate clutter I went to an WRTP54G. Right off I discovered that the first RJ-11 port was faulty and was forced to use the second port. I discovered the wireless side was very weak signal-wise (kept loosing connections and only got a "good" signal on both wireless boxes) and very poor wireless security (and no blocking by MAC address). I eventually returned to the DI-624 and RTP300. Since then I always get an "excellent" wireless signal; I was amazed at how much faster all three connections seemed after that switch.

I can't provide any quantitative data but qualitatively speaking I'd say the WRTP54G is a (very) poor choice.

Is your overall internet browsing slow or is it just when you try to access the routers login page? What happens when you disconnect the WRTP54G from your setup and your modem is connected directly to your computer? ( I know you can't access the routers login page but is your web surfing faster?) Which internet browser do you use? You may want to check your internet connection settings options, particularly the LAN settings...IF one of these are incorrectly set it can cause extremely slow web surfing.

I've had my WRTP54G for well over a year now and although there are better "routers" on the market compared to this one, it has performed extremely well for me as a Voip device and as a router that is wired directly to my desktop and wirelessly for every notebook (4) I've set up.

The WRTP54G does in deed support Wireless Mac Filtering. This option is available on the Wireless / Wireless Mac Filter tab of the routers page. I also would add that the wireless signal provides a constant and strong signal for my wireless. Sorry to hear that yours didn't perform as well.

As stated, my comments were qualitative, not quantitative. My statement about MAC filtering can probably be attributed to poor memory (mine, not the computer's!). I have no recollection of speed while accessing the router directly; my comments all apply to the router in normal use.

My WRTP54G has now been retired but for those of you who may have interest: The browser in use has been Firefox since version 0.9. The reason I switched back to the DI-624 was primarily the result of my experience with the wireless section of the WRTP54G which, provided unreliable connections to two machines (and several guests with their own laptops). BTW, over time I tried several different channels with no better results on any. Both the WRTP54G and the DI-624 occupied the same physical location when they were running. I believe both routers were correctly configured for their intended purposes. Both routers were running the latest firmware.

In any case, my comment that the DI-624 seemed faster was an incidental discovery; that observation is purely subjective. My experience could be explained by weak wireless connections but it is the same observation I had with this machine which is plugged into LAN port 1.

That the first RJ-11 port on my unit proved defective suggests this particular unit may have snuck by QC with marginal specs.

if you are noticing that your internet is slow when behind the WRTP54G then you can log in to the device and turn off the DNS proxy...setting static DNS on your PC from open DNS is usually a good choice for fast DNS resolving

if just logging in to the device is slow then do a hard reset on back of the device for 20 seconds and try logging in from a different PC, if that is not an option and it is still slow try changing the LAN port and the ethernet cable

emac is right, the DNS proxy on the WRTP54G is pretty weak. You'll usually get "page not found" errors and not slow Internet access, but bypassing it is a good idea anyway. If nothing else, it takes some of the load off the router.

Thanks, Nate. I "dumb-lucked" into that cure. I got a lot of "page not found" screens, killed the WRTP54G's proxy and set static DNS on my PC. That totally solved the "page not found" problem.

Still, the deal breaker was the weak wireless section. I even moved my cordless phone to the other side of the desk, fiddled with channels and bent the antenna every-which-way.

The DI-624, OTOH, is rock solid on the wireless side and I've got no complaints on the rest of the box.

The wireless always worked fine for me on the WRTP54G, but it is a somewhat weak wireless router. I think the included antenna is pretty low-gain.

On the other hand, it's a fantastic Vonage adapter, once you stop using it as a router and get a better one. At least in my experience. Wink
