If you want to talk about it in those terms, don't compare apples (VoIP) to oranges (TDM)..
TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) is a traditional T1/E1 type of copper connection that provides 24-30 voice/data channels. It's been the standard for trunk connection for years (aside from OC-x's, T3's, lets keep this simple)
"VoIP" is just a concept; rather than reference VoIP, you probably want to look at SIP/RTP (Session Initiation Protocol/Real-time Transfer Protocol) "trunks" which are IP-based network tranmissions that carry our favorite VoIP sessions.
So it boils down to TDM vs SIP/RTP as the transport mechanism. Obviously SIP/RTP is the wave of the future. Ethernet networks are everywhere and will continue to be expand so it's a lot easier to route SIP/RTP connections which can then deliver your network data, both your internal and exterior phone lines, your television programming (in the near future) all over the same wires.
Ultimately everything will converge onto IP-based Ethernet networks and everything will talk to everything else. |
