I should have mentioned the hissing on the rtp300 started many months before I first connected to the home wiring, when I was still plugging the phone straight to the rtp300. From what I've read, it may be a problem with linksys routers/adapters. After I plugged into our home wiring, the background hissing from the rtp300 didnt get any better or worse so I let it go on for a few months and finally decided I'd try to get rid of it. The D-link really is a good adapter in that regard - when I plug the phone straight to the VTA the sound quality is almost as good as a land line.
We have 2 lines, and i've only plugged one line from VTA into the wall jack - the other is connected to a fax machine.
I haven't tried using a multimeter, but the phones were dead silent after I disconnected the Dmarc.
Thanks for all the suggestions! As soon as we figure it out, I'll post. |

If you're using a fully wired, 4 conductor phone cord to plug the VTA into the wall jack, try replacing that cord with a cheap-o 2 conductor cord. |

i think mjstraw said something similar to this when he wrote about the phone cord or phone instrument
many times what causes this is a bad phone and the VTA just picks it up differently than the RTP300 like mjstraw said
try plugging in the home wiring and just disconnect all the phones from the wall jacks...then go in to a room and plug in just one phone to the phone jack and test...no busy signal then go to the next room and do the same...if you get to a point that you hear the busy then you know it is that last phone you put in
a cheap way to see if it is a bad cord or phone causing it if you do not have the right equipment to test for voltage or if it is the wiring in the walls |

Here's the latest - Vonage sent a crew from Endeavor Tech to check out my home wiring. Unfortunately I wasn't home, but someone let them in and the Endeavor crew said the problem was with the way my home alarm system was connected to my phone lines. That's surprising. We cancelled the alarm contract (monitronics) months ago and I disconnected the AC power from the alarm box before I connected to the home wiring network using the RTP300 and I was able use phones using wall jacks throughout the house, without busy signals. The endeavor tech started fussing around with the telcom box before saying he couldn't fix it and I would have to get the alarm company to disconnect the alarm system from my phone line. The endeavor tech said he would leave everything as it was before, but now I don't even get a busy signal on the other jacks when I use the D-Link VTA. And when I switch to the RPT300 (and call Vonage to change settings,) I just get dead air instead of the dialtone I used to get before the Endeavor tech fussed with the telcom box. |
