I'm not sure of the exact structure of the Vonage SIP network, but doubt that area-codes have anything to do with which proxy your adapter registers.

So when reporting "this telephone line cannot register to the Vonage network" outages, specifyinng which area code you're in is meaningless.

Also, the Vonage servers are only involved in call setup, teardown, call waiting, and other "signaling" functions. The actual traffic between the calling parties does not involve the Vonage servers. So, if their servers go down in the middle of a call you won't be disconnected.

If your call is to the PSTN and the gateway you're using goes down, then your call would be terminated. But in this case your line could still be "registered to the Vonage network" and able to initiate/receive calls.

Dialtone is produced by the Vonage adapter on your premise, not by anything out on the network. So is the "can't register" error message/speech.

Would sure be nice if they got a native english-speaker to record the error messages on adapters sold in the US.

Just some random thoughts.

Mark

PS - my line has been out of service for an hour or so. Internet connection working fine.

This is quite true as my UK service was down a few days ago, I was told I was on 'Proxy S'.

A properly designed network could survive the failure of one or more proxy servers - hardware or software failure, including "upgrades".

Upgrades are normally scheduled off-peak.

The "upgrade" explanation for the outage is either a fib (sounds good to the low-tech customer) or an indication that Vonage doesn't know how to run the service properly.

Since the proxy servers have been indicated to be a DNS resolved name "like s", I imagine that there are groups of computer servers grouped to one specific server group.

For example, ~6 computers built into each letter.

Now, it could possibly make sense that they are upgrading the way that their servers are processing the Voip data, especially after all of these lawsuit developments lately.

I doubt that they're tied into area codes, they're probably assigned based on simple volume. It would cost way to much if they were trying to maintain a full alphabet of servers.

(a-z 26 letters * 6 computers each = egads on the electric bill)

I've had August for the better half of a year now, and I've never encountered this type of service outage, or never was knowingly affected by it. And even if I am - I have my Network Availability Number set up so it'll hit my cell phone.

Not concerned. I'd rather them upgrade all the servers than have to eventually pay some stupid royalty taxes or fee to Verizon because of the whole patent thing.
