I have a home intercom system and have my pap2 adapter in a different room from the phone wiring. What is the best way for me to connect my pap2 adapter to give phone access to all the phone jacks in my house?

With a normal home wiring setup, you can simply plug the PAP2 into any wall jack (important: provided you have the telco's line detached from it!!!) and have Vonage fed through the entire home wiring system.

In your case, is there anything special about the intercom? Do you use the intercom for your regular telephone access, and if so is there any special wiring or are the telephone lines run normally?

I tried plugging the pap2 into any wall jack, and that didn't work. It's actually an intercom system set up through the phone lines. You can use a phone connected to a wall jack to call any other phone connected to a wall jack. It seems as though the telephone lines are run normally.

I asked someone about directly wiring the line from the pap2 into the home phone wiring and was told that electrical pulses from the intercom could damage the adapter.

hey man.. heres something that might help

a telephone jack uses 2 of the 4 wires found in standard phone wire. if your intercomm system uses only 2 of the 4 wires aswell then you still have two sets of wires that could be changed over on the wall jack nearest the unit you wish to be on a seperate phone line. u would also have to make the wire change on the wall phone jack at the destination of your wiring needs aswell. hope that helps.

p.s. my phone wire has red green yellow black. yellow and black are like neutral and ground sometimes from what ive also heard. i only need the red and green hooked up to make the line function though.

That's a good suggestion. You could also leave things wired as they are, but plug the adapter in to the wall jack by plugging it into the L2 port on one of those L1/L2 adapters. That would put the Vonage service on line 2, and you could use a 2 line phone in any jack in the house to use both intercom and Vonage line.

However, it's a little bothersome that plugging the PAP2 into the wall jack didn't work at all. Did it do anything? I'd want to investigate a bit more by temporarily disconnecting the intercom and trying again.

In normal home phone wiring, RED/GREEN is for Line 1, and YELLOW/BLACK is for Line 2. Some houses are only run with RED/GREEN, and even if the house is run with all four colors, frequently the installers do not connect YELLOW/BLACK or even use phone jacks that only support two conductors.

However, if your house was wired properly, you should be able to use one of the L1/L2 adapters as Steve suggested above and simply use the YELLOW/BLACK pair.

IMPORTANT STEP: Hook up the L1/L2 adapter and plug a plain old telephone into L2. If you hear a dial tone, or anything at all other than complete dead silence, DO NOT hook up the Vonage adapter to it - there's voltage in them thar wires. The Vonage adapter should be the ONLY thing feeding voltage to the lines it is connected to.

Now, having said all that, if the intercom works with a regular phone line, it SHOULD work with a Vonage line. Vonage supplies a simulated POTS (Plain Old Telephone system) line out of its RJ11 jacks. However, the same test applies - if there's ANY sound or lighting of the keypad or anything out of a plain telephone connected to the house wiring, then do not connect the Vonage adapter to that line - chances are good you'll let the smoke out.

Good points. In fact, even if the line seems to be completely dead when you plug into it, the Vonage adapter will probably not work if a land line is connected. Make sure that it's physically disconnected, not just dead.
