Complete shutdown is unlikely. Given the government mandate that they comply and provide E911 service, this would suddently strand millions with out 911 access.

That fact alone, pointed out elsewhere, I think means there will be no shutdown.

switch/server based speed dial is also a service available from some providers. Verizon offers it on the PSTN

All I have to say is that actions speak louder than words or messages. I do not care what management of Vonage has to say of what will not happen or that service will continue, that the lawsuite won't affect us, etc. What will be judged is the actions of having uninterupted service. That has been the issue lately for Vonage and is a sign I think regardless that something isn't right. Because I've had some friends, before they moved to a different state and switch service had Vonage for a while back in early to mid 2006. They didn't have any problems, etc but ever since I switched to Vonage in December, there have been so many issues(on the Vonage side not being the equipment, user, or anything like that, etc) in the last couple months or so that it is so bad. I will be looking around for something to replace Vonage because I did not sign up for poor service, poor quality. They cannot seem to get it right lately. Literally, we wake up each day wondering if our phone will work or not today. That is not good. I think they just cannot handle the load of customers coming to them and it has affected the service and they cannot counter that to get customer service or service quality to a decent standard.

I would like to see Vonagge work an agreement with another Voip provider to have them assume service to Vonage customers in case Vonage needs to shut down.

That should keep those "customers that should have been Verizons" from Verizon.

Don't worry. I will use tin cans and string before I return to Verizon. They drove me to Voip. I didn't look for it before the service from Verizon made me look for options. There is no turning back. I think I'll add another virtual number just to help Vonage out.

Last week sometime I saw an add for employment for the US Patent Office. So maybe they are feeling the heat from this suit to have more or better people evaluate the patents. Given the patents are so broad in nature, you might as well say that Verizon invented the internet (stretching I know). They can't reverse the patent can they?

I have the same issues as other, i.e. worrying about losing my long time phone number that I ported over to Vonage. I figure that I will ride the storm for now and see what happens.

In order to port my number back to another carrier, I would have to get a third line, until the porting is complete. My long time phone number is for voice, my second phone number is a fax line. It would be a nightmare trying to re-port from Vonage at this time.

With respect to QOS, it really is mostly local network set-up issues which will affect you. I do not recommend plugging a Vonage Router into another router locally. I recommend that you plug the vongage router directly into your cable modem.

I also recommend that you use a Hawking Booster directly from your cable modem to your Vonage router. Especially if you run lots of data through your network like I do.

Once I got setup properly on my end the Phone service quality and sound volume is much better than my Time Warner Digital Phone Service. My only complaint with Vonage is that my fax was unreliable through Vonage, so I got a seperate Time Warner Digital phone line just for faxing.

Yes, the patent claims can be rendered invalid or unenforcible under certain extreme conditions. I have not looked at the patents, claims or file histories, but that is one of the ultimate risks that Verizon has taken. It should be one of Vonage's defense strategies as well.
