Hey
I have an existing home network (wired/wireless combo), am was wondering if it is possible to successfully daisy chain the Linksys RP router to my existing router ?
Has anyone done this ?
Thanks

Yes, I have done this succesfully with a D-Link Wireless router. I Left the D-Link where it is as my primary LAN router, then inserted the new Vonage Linksys router between the D-Link and the Modem. Configured the Linksys to access my Service Provider (User ID and Password) and configured the D-Link WAN output as an input to the the Linksys LAN. I have tried the D-link with a Dynamic IP address as a DHCP client of the Linksys, also tried giving the D-Link a static IP address. Both methods work, but I think that using a static IP address is better because if the network is interrupted for any reason it is probably more stable. Of course the two routers cannot be configured with the same Class C network ID since they are different networks. |

Thank you very much for confirming that this works with D-Link ... unfortunately I'm unsure what to do in the dialog box with the instruction "configured the D-Link WAN output as an input to the the Linksys LAN" as none of the labels indicate input or output. |

Yes you are right the WAN is bi-directional. My D-Link is a DI-624 wireless G Router which is behind the Vonage Linksys router, so the D-Link WAN connects into the Linksys LAN. The easiest way for the D-Link to identify its WAN port to the Linksys is to do the following: Log onto the D-Link and go to menu: Home/WAN and select "Dynamic IP Address". That's all you have to do, the Linksys will supply one of its available IP Addresses to the D-Link WAN using DHCP. What this means is that your original setup for the D-Link WAN port will no longer use your ISP information which you set in there originally for example: PPPoE mode and UserID/Password. PPPoE mode and UserID/Password will have to be set into the WAN port of your Vonage Linksys router since that now talks directly to your ISP via the modem. (assumes your ISP requires PPPoE, otherwise use whatever protocol they require, of course) |

Here is some more information I found on daisy chaining D-Link with Vonage Linksys router. I noticed after a few days that my MS Outlook e-mail send/receive was intermittent and often failed, which it never did when I just had the D-Link. I found the D-Link default MTU size was factory set to 1500 (highest allowable value) but the Linksys is set by Vonage to 1492. To fix this problem, I have set the D-Link MTU to 1492 so that they both match (did not want to change the Vonage setting in case it interfered with the quality of the phone service). This has fixed the problem. To change the D-Link MTU, use menu: Home/WAN and type in the value then Save. The D-Link resets and everything should work OK with e-mail. |
