PostPosted: Sun Apr 01, 2007 8:24 pm    Post subject: Loud background noise / Dropped calls Reply with quote Back to top

1. Your location: Orlando, FL
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc): Brighthouse Network / Cable
3. Upload and download speeds 7.1M D / 491k down
4. Modem make and model: Toshiba PCX2500
5. Type of Vonage adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2: Model # RTP300
6. Setup of Network: To Cable Modem / To Wireless router / To Vonage (all hardwired w/CAT 5)
7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc: Loud background noise and Choppy Audio

Any ideas on how to improve the background noise? I am having Brighthouse come and re-run the cable line from the box into my house in hopes that it improves.

Sometimes if I take the entire system down (shut it down - no power) the background noise gets better, but never goes away.

Any help would be appreciated.

It is Monday which means they will usually have it fixed by Wednesday and it will work great until next Monday. If you do not like this you can call customer service and wait on hold for an hour or two so they can tell you that it is a known problem and that they are working on it. Or you can do like I am about to do. Cancel this stupid Vonage service and go back to the crooks at AT$T. I would rather get ripped off and have my phone working than miss calls from an inept company. I run a business and each call is money. Too bad Vonage, you almost had a good thing going but this is the 7th time in 4 months that I have had major problems.

Background noise? Like, you're hearing to much in the background? My suggestion is to contact technical support and have them adjust the settings that basically control the volume of your microphone on the line.

If they lower the transmission volume, in decibels, this should get rid of a lot.

Now, keep in mind you've described this as basically a sensitive microphone. To really troubleshoot this issue, maybe you should try swapping the telephone and maybe the phone cord.

Agreed.

A couple of other things. You say you have a wireless router. What kind of phone do you have? A 2.4 GHz cordless plus a wireless router can cause problems. Also, try temporarily removing the router and running the RTP300 directly to the modem (I would recommend this procedure even if the router were not wireless.). Does the situation improve?

Even when I plug a old phone into the Vonage box, I get the same loud static / background noise.

I moved the Vonage box away from the computer, it is still loud. Had a new cable run from the street to my house, still just as bad.

Should I request a new Vonage box? I'm about out of ideas and will have to switch back to POTS.

Todd, make sure that your power adapters for your cable modem, wireless router and Vonage adapter are plugged in to their correct sources and not mismatched.

Also, once you've done that, and if you're disconnected from any house wiring and using a simple corded phone plugged directly into the Vonage box, and it's still giving this problem, then I would surmise that it's time to replace the RTP300. Before doing that, I would also remove the wireless router and plug the RTP300 directly into your modem. If that doesn't fix it, then the RTP is about the only thing left.

Thanks Steve. I pretty much ripped everything out tonight, and still have the static / loud background noise. Doesn't seem like Vonage likes sending you a new box (just started my e-mail exchange w/them)

How old is your device? If it is over 1 year old, then the warranty on it has expired. If this is the case then it may be quite difficult to get them to foot the bill for a new device for you and emails between you and tech will be all but fruitless. The techs you are emailing most likely do not even have the ability to replace a device let alone on that is out of warranty. You would do better calling them and speaking to an advanced department(tech or customer service, either should work). They would be the ones who can arrange a new device for you.
