I have a serious problem, a deal breaker. If I can't get this fixed I must go with a different service. I am trying to avoid this since Vonage has been (customer service speaking) very good to me.

I have 2 computers and a phone plugged into a rt31p2 router, which is running through a befcmu10 modem. I download heavily throughout the day and night, and upload as well. My connection is a 8000/384, and rates about that high through speed tests online.

When said downloads and uploads are going, my phone is unusable. My girlfriend will pick up the phone and try to call someone. Within about 5 minutes she will say 'hello', 'hello', and the call is gone. Looking at my router at this point I see the light for phone 1 is now off. All my downloads and uploads are now at 0k/0k and the internet connection is entirely severed. I have to unplug the router and modem, and plug them back in after a few.

On searching for help about this before posting, I found a suggestion to use 'QoS' to forward the voice as top priority. I looked in my router settings and found that my QoS was already set, but to 512K. The suggestion was to set the QoS to 'just under' my upstream, so I set it to 360, and it seemed to help nothing.

As it is now, I must turn off all traffic from/to the computers before using the phone...

What can I do about this?

edit: I have 2 ports forwarded to one of the computers and the other computer just uses browsing and rarely at that.

I think the basic problem is the fact that you're doing so much uploading or downloading.

Downloading really isn't the issue since just about all ISPs give you more download bandwidth than upload. But, if you're using a music or file sharing program or even playing X-Box Live or Computer Games on multiple PC's at the same time, think of it as traffic.

You're now trying to use Voice on top of it. If you notice your modem suddenly starts flashing like a reset, it's possible that the modem may just not be able to support that much data throughput for so long.

The great news is that youve narrowed down the problem to exist only when the PC is downloading or uploading, so you're probably dropping under your amount of bandwidth.

Your device should have QoS built in. I would suggest you set HTTP traffic (port 80) to LOW (this will make webpages run a LITTLE bit slower when you're on a call or downloading, possibly).

The trick to QOS is prioritizing the right ports. You should be able to check to see which ports your program is using when you download or upload, and set them to low. Try that.

I know the ports being used for both of the major programs involved, 11x and 10xxx.

I have (now, since reading your reply) set the 'Application-based QoS' to 'enable', and manually inserted the two ports in question, leaving them at 'low priority'

I'll let you know probably tonight or tomorrow if this has worked, thanks!

May I also suggest that you consider getting a Hawking booster or a wrt54g with aftermarket firmware. The reason being that your uploading and downloading will eventually kill your rt31p2 since it was never intended to be used as a high powered router. As a result, you will most likely continue to have similar call quality issues.

Perhaps, lowering the bandwidth (go to your account on www.vonage.com and select features) on your Vonage down to 50kbps will help some. But ultimately, you will most likely have to get another router.

Do a search for the Hawking booster or the wrt54g and you'll see what people are saying.

Vonage also uses ports 10,000-20,000. Is it possible that you are not running into a bandwidth issue, but a port contention issue? Can you change the port numbers you use with the other applications?

Also, keep in mind that most routers have a limited size to their connections table (the number of connections they can keep open at one time). Many applications such as P2P open and close a lot of ports quickly, which can cause this table to fill up and prevent any more connections from being made. Basically, this causes the router to appear to "lock up" requiring a reboot (which clears the connections table). My WRTP54G (Vonage router by Linksys) had a limit of about 2000 connections, which isn't too bad, but it also would not "reuse" connections that were disconnected "dirty" (no specific disconnect) until they were idle for FIVE DAYS. Since certain applications like P2P use a lot of connections and tend to close them dirty, the connections table has a tendency to fill up fast, and it won't clean itself up fast enough.
