Does Voip call quality improve with 5.8Ghz phones or is it irrelevant?

It is irrelevant to the quality of Voip.

Where it can make a difference is if you are running a wireless router and using a 2.4ghz cordless phone. Wireless routers also use 2.4ghz. this can cause interference with the cordless phone not internet or Voip. This would be the case if you were using a POTS line, 2.4 cordless, and wireless router too.

So if you have a wireless network 5.8ghz would be recommended, but not always necessary.

"It is irrelevant to the quality of VoIP."

Well, technically that's true.

BUT, if you get a 5.8 Ghz set that happens to be digital, like the new GE ones, rather than the old style analog type, there IS a difference in quality, at least to your ear. Not to mention the digital ones have less static and interference, and I haven't gotten ANY crosstalk on it.

I would go to a retail store and find a digital set, try it out, and if there's no noticeable difference, just take it back. Worth a shot, right?

I'd also definitely agree that anything less than 5.8 Ghz is either going to be hell with wireless around, or people potentially eavesdropping on the lower banded ones (900Mhz).

People won't believe me when I say 900 Mhz has the best range. That frequency is just very crowded. 2.4 Ghz does have the problem with wireless. 5.8 Ghz has less range but can handle more features through ability to handle more information. For that reason 5.8 Ghz can handle multiple phone adapters on one base. Want to get all the details and have time to take a read? Take a peak at this explanation.

I think you will find the 5.8 Ghz will work with Voip. But, look forward to the new 1.9 Ghz frequency to come out with the best of all worlds, except price. As with any "new" feature, the price will be high at first. (And all they did was change frequencies!) Smile

FWIW, we have two phones in our house. A very high-end business-style Nortel Meridian corded, and a cordless Uniden (two-line), 5.8 GHz. The Unidens have some sort of DSP to "improve" the quality of the sound. And it works! I find the Unidens to sound "better" than the Nortel. YMMV.
