PostPosted: Fri Mar 30, 2007 5:53 pm    Post subject: Using netgear fvs124g & linksys rt31p2 with no outbound Reply with quote Back to top

The way my nework is configured is from my cable modem to the netgear fvs124g out of Lan 1 port to the Linksys rt31p2. Now everything appears to work fine. The phone rings when it should and I can make phone calls. However when I pick up the phone I can hear the caller but, all they hear is static.

I have set the rules on the Netgear to allow any incomming and outgoing communication between the Vonage/Linksys box. And still no change. Any suggestions?

Do things work properly if you (temporarily) plug the RT31P2 directly into the modem?

Does the Netgear have a firewall? If you disable it, does the system work properly?

Are all ports open to the Vonage box? If not, does the Netgear allow a DMZ? Try putting the Vonage box in the DMZ.

I have gone through the FAQ and set the rules to allow and route all traffic properly. The real mystery here for me is why it will allow me to hear incomming but, the out going audio isn't there.

Apparently some other people have had problems with this router as well. You may want to look at this tidbit: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic14327.html

I have a feeling that you just need to find the right settings for the Netgear, but you always have the option of putting the RT31P2 ahead of the Netgear.

Make sure the fvs124g is running the latest firmware

You shouldn't need any port forwarding or firewall rules with this router.

I have the same issue at the author of the message you mention - using load balancing feature of FVS124G disrupts the Vonage device. I get good dialtone, and I get ringing at both ends if I place or receive calls. But no voice transmission occurs.

There is no response to that message, so I don't know if the problem was ever resolved or not.

You might try defining a "service" that is any traffic to/from your Vonage adapter.

Then bind that service to one wan interface and see if that helps.

You shouldn't need any port forwarding or firewall rules with this router.

A quick note on this - latest firmware for FVS124G is 1.1.38. When I upgraded my router to this version it completely crapped out my PPoE connection to BellSouth, so the Vonage service was unusable. Back-reving to 1.1.30 got me back online. But still had some quality issue with Vonage device. The latest firmware is not always the best.

With the older firmware restored I used the documentation published here and at Netgear forums to (attempt to) forward all necessary ports to the Vonage device and disable SIP, but no improvement in quality.

Today I installed a second broadband line via Comcast cable. Now attempting to run FVS124G in "load balancing" mode which distributes traffic between WAN ports, hoping to offload all Voip traffic to one WAN. I have used the router's "protocol binding" feature to bind the published protocols Vonage uses to WAN1 port. The exception is HTTP, which is bound to WAN2 for speed purposes.

The result is what I noted in message above - good dialtone, ringing at both ends on both incoming and outgoing calls, but no voice transmission.

My question is, are there any other protocols - other than those published on the Vonage port forwarding tech note - that I can look for? What I see on WAN2 packet capture is a ton of ARP requests going through whenever I place a Vonage call.
