I am at a loss. Isn't WinXP's dialer and the many other PC based apps that dial and make calls from a PC softphones?

If so, then why do we need to get other "softphones" to dial and make calls through the PC, with our Vonage service?

Please advise...

No, the Windows dialer is designed to control a modem in your hardware. That modem needs to be connected to phone line to work.

There are many Softphones, including those found in most current IM packages. In order to be used with the Vonage softphone service the Softphone must be SIP compatible (Skype for example uses a proprietary protocol not SIP) and must be configurable to allow connection to Vonage's servers (most IM softphones are not).

You need a softphone and the Vonage softphone service or a VPhone if you want to make a call from your computer without using an analog phone line.

Ok. Given that I have a modem, and a dialer (XP and others) how can I take advantage of that with a bluetooth device without having to incurr in a softphone, since I don't seem to need it, anyway.

Thanks for the help...

By bluetooth device, do you mean headset?

Once you have your headset working with XP you can use your bluetooth headset along with your modem to take calls on your PC. It is a simple matter of selecting the phone line as an input/output device and disabling your other audio devices (unless you want to hear your MP3s during your call).

Now we're getting somewhere. Smile

Given that my PC is not set up for bluetooth, do I need a "dongle" to have my bluetooth headset work with the PC?

Thanks again...

you will need a blue tooth adapter to make your computer bluetooth capable, and that plugs into your usb port.

Does that mean that if I install a bluetooth adapter on the PC, the hardware, e.g. modem, that is now *not a bluetooth modem* would become bluetooth capable?

Forgive me, but as you can see, I am very ignorant about bluetooth, etc.

Thanks...

You also need a blue tooth device say a head set. For example you have a palm pilot and it is blue tooth the only way it will connect to your computer is if your computer already is blue tooth enabled or you have purchased a blue tooth adapter to make it blue tooth accessible.

I do have a plantronics bluetooth headset, which is the reason I want to be able to communicate wtih the PC via bluetooth, in order to use the headset to answer calls with the PC modem (which is not bluetooth).

That is all I am trying to do. Is that possible?

To be honest I haven't used the pc to receive phone calls except with Skype and such and that was with a wired headset and mike.

You want to receive calls using Vonage and softphone, then this should work all you are doing is replacing the headphone and mike in the equation.
