PostPosted: Thu May 17, 2007 8:08 am    Post subject: Odd Network Unplugging with WRTP54G Reply with quote Back to top

I have a similar but different problem. Still with the "Network Cable Unplugged" issue. And it all started about four days ago, after over a year of perfect operation. I could not be happier with the performance of the Vonage router I had, and I don't understand why people hate the WRTP54G so much (until now!).

My setup is as follows:

Two laptops, one 802.1B and one 802.1G
DSL with 1500 down/ 350 up ( speed tests average 1200/300)
WRTP54G router
HP network printer static IP
Desktop computer

The B laptop and desktop run 2000 (old POS computer) and the G laptop runs XP. I don't think the hardware specs are relevant so won't waste space listing.

The problem is the router fails intermittedly. Works for about eight or so hours on average, sometimes less, sometimes more, usually the router needs power cycled after I get home from work. The DSL is fine, checked it all out hooked directly to the laptop, all tests with it are positive. And although I power cycled it when the problems first started, discovered it wasn't necessary cause it was working fine.

Printer works fine, although I disconnected it to remove variables from the troubleshooting. The other thing I noticed though, around the same time, is the desktop will sporadically pop up "Network Cable Unplugged" and then "Network Plugged In". It was mildly annoying, but I only use that machine for email anyway so no big deal.

However, while troubleshooting the network issues (called Vonage useless support), and reset the router to factory defaults, and hardwired the laptop (XP) to run the laptop software, and noted the desktop stayed connected the entire time. Pulled the cable out to test the wireless, and the desktop broke at the same time. Plug the cable back in and the desktop is fine. Tried it a few more times, and discovered the desktop works fine if the laptop is plugged in.

Very weird.

Here is what I have tried:

- Every combination of plugging them into different ports. Does not matter. If the laptop is plugged in, the desktop is happy. If not (connected wireless or not), the desktop disconnects/connects to infinity.

- Firmware updating to 1.00.62. So did the Vonage Indian guy.
He claims no recent updates, but I still think SOMETHING changed.

- He switched my phone from port 1 to port 2. Not sure WHY this would affect anything, but Indian dude insisted. Net result - the phone works in the other jack.

- Full virus scans on both computers. Nothing. Did a netstat -a and it doesn't appear the two are "talking" to each other. Haven't messed with packet sniffers or things like that, but the blinking lights aren't indicating any traffic.

- Assigning static IPs, messing with speeds and duplex settings.

- Swapped cables to known good ones.

Any advice on what else to check would be appreciated. Every search of tech support forums has had the answer "get a better router", but I reject the notion that replacing the router is necessary. Unless there has been some sort physical hardware issue (the thing has been on continously for a year, with no modifications to the settings), I really do not want to have to purchase new hardware. (I'm in Australia and it'd take a week to get here plus expensive shipping).

Thanks

The WRTP54G recently got upgraded to a 5.01.04 release (which mine is running right now), you may want to log into your router and make sure the firmware version on the Status page matches the one in the upper-right corner. If the upper-right-corner reads 1.00.62 and the status page reads 5.01.04, then you have an incomplete firmware load. Turn off wireless and restart the router - this should free up enough memory to complete the install.

A LOT of people have complained about the 5.x release since it started being deployed a month or so ago. You can call Vonage and ask that they set your default version to 1.00.62, which is the last known stable release. You can also install any firmware you want using my instructions below, but understand that Vonage will overwrite your firmware with whatever is set in your Vonage profile in fairly short order:

Also, are you running any sort of P2P software? Azureus, Limewire, etc? If so, the WRTP54G has a limited connection table and when it gets full, you'll run into all sorts of connection problems. This is one of the reasons I ended up putting a real router in front of my WRTP54G and using the WRTP54G as a Vonage device only.
