PostPosted: Thu Mar 29, 2007 10:44 pm    Post subject: RT31P2 As A Bridge Reply with quote Back to top

I've searched for the past 45 mins on the forums and cannot find what I need.

Here is my setup.

Motorola Cable Modem (Connected to)

WAN port of WRT54GS
LAN ports of WRT54GS
1: Simpletech NAS drive
2: Linksys RT31P2 WAN Port

LAN ports of RT31P2:
1: Home PC

Here is the issue: Since the RT31P2 serves up an IP address to the Home PC on a different subnet that the WRT54GS, I cannot get to my SimpleTech drive by saying \\Simpletech\Share.

You may say, just plug the Home PC into the WRT54GS, but for a variety of reasons I cannot do this.

So, is there a way to bridge the RT31P2 onto the WRT54GS so that my Home PC is getting its IP address from the WRT54GS.

If I remove the Cat5 cable from the WAN port of the RT31P2 and plug it into LAN port 2, my PC gets an IP address from the WRT54GS...good news and I can see my SimpleTech share. BAD NEWS: Phone stops working (Phone 1 light does not light).

The forum talks about disabling NAT and/or DHCP and/or doing port forwarding and/or and/or.

Does anyone know if I can do what I'm trying? I'd like to have one subnet for my home and use Vonage.

Thanks,
Scott

It sounds like you basically want to turn your router, which assigns private networks, into a switch, which basically just intelligently sends signals to the same IP address.

You can try to log into the RT31P2 and basically select the option in setup and disable the DHCP / NAT, this way your router won't assign IP's to anything connected to it.

Or, maybe you could go to the store, buy a switch (they are like 10-15 dollars, possibly free after rebate), and connect your network like this:

Modem -> WRT54GS -> NAS & Switch -> RT3 & PC.

This will split the private IP assigned to your Switch to both the PC and the RT31P2. It may cause some flakyness, so if you're not that technically inclined, you really might want to just get everything on the same subnet.

The best situation for any Vonage device is:

Modem -> Vonage -> Third Party Router et. al.

I suggest you connect it as shown above, then connect your PC and NAS to the third party router. This way you won't lose quality of service.

I'm not sure why you can't connect your PC to your first router, but that would most likely be the best solution.

Thanks for your help. I am trying to keep as much equipment as possible in the basement. If I put the RT31P2 there, I have to attach my first phone down there.

So, I have run a Cat 5 cable up the laundry chute and put the RT31P2 next to the Home PC and connected the phone to it. I *could* run a second cable from the home PC to the WRT54GS, but I was trying to avoid that since I have 3 beautiful, open ports on the RT31P2....but again, because I'd be on a different subnet I cannot use an NFS name \\SimpleShare\<Folder>.

Thanks for your help. Any other suggestions?

See option 3:

http://vonage.nmhoy.net/tworouters.html

Remember to turn off DHCP on the RT31P2 so only your WRT54GS is handing out IP addresses.

Those are some nice diagrams. It makes total sense. Thanks. I'll give it a shot this weekend.
