Post subject: Home Wiring Problem solved
I followed the Michigan phone guide for instructions on how to disconnect from the Bell network and connect the ATA to a jack instead of the phone.
The problem I experienced was that when I picked up the phone I'd get a dialtone and could make only a SINGLE outbound call, thereafter the line was dead. Only once the cable to the jack was unplugged and reconnected did the dial tone come back.
This results from one of the other phones in the home not hanging up the line. Once I unplugged all phones in the house and re-connected them one-by-one, I was able to single out the bad phone, (an old ATT 2-line speakerphone). Now all is fine and I always get a dialtone over and over.
BTW- another UNIDEN 2.4GHz seems to no longer work at all, but it is a minor loss ~$20 to replace it.
One other note, I forgot that I also had DSL filters on all phones from a previous DSL installation that I totally forgot about - no need for them either chuck them.
