PostPosted: Thu Mar 29, 2007 6:45 am    Post subject: Current VOIP Adapter Shipped or Best Retail Adapter Reply with quote Back to top

Hello,

I just joined the forum and I was wondering which adapter Vonage is shipping if you sign up on the website? In your opinion is this a good adapter or should I purchase an adapter from a retail store? If so which adapter and why?

I am a Network Administrator and have delt with enterprise Voip utlitizing T1's as trunks. This would be my first experience with consumer based Voip.

The plain simple D-link works very well for me. If you don't need a router I would highly recomend it.

I have the Motorola VT2442, when I signed up I got it for "free" I just had to pay the shipping charges. I see on the Vonage site that you have to pay for this one but you can get the 2 port VT2142 for free.

Even if you *do* need a router, I'd go with the VTA and purchase a separate router elsewhere. The router/adapter combos Vonage provides/sells don't do a very good job of routing.

I'm going to second Mark on this one ^^^^^^^

I have yet to see anyone that is thrilled with the routing, and most particularly the QoS, capabilities of ANY of the Vonage routers.

For $75 or so, you can get a really good router, then just get the simplest, most basic Vonage adapter you can get your hands on, and call it a love story. Chances are, if your routing needs get at all demanding, you'll end up buying a real router later on anyway...

Well you can add me to the not thrilled with the QoS list. So far lowering bandwidth to Normal is working, so...

Lowering the bandwidth can certainly help. It simply lowers the "bandwidth footprint" of your Vonage line, which means there is more bandwidth available for everything else.

Unfortunately, if you use your connection heavily, you'll eventually find that it won't help any more, but if it works for you for now without having to buy a better router, then... go for it! Wink I'm all for not having to spend any money unnecessarily.

(ps: welcome aboard)

I just picked up a d-link di-120 for $20 +$9 shipping on ebay. Hope to play with it this weekend. Looks like a twin of the Hawking Tech HBB1.

At retail price you might be just as well off getting a QoS-capable router.

But then again, these units look like they do more than just priority queuing. When Voip etc traffic is detected they fragment the other traffic so Voip packets don't have to wait for a large whatever packet to finish.
