I'm beginning to become very frustrated.
More and more often, when dialing any and all numbers on my Vonage line, I get the automated response:

'We're sorry, the number you are dialing is invalid. Please check the number and try again. Oh-1-zero-1"

The numbers I am dialing are not invalid - in fact even Vonage customer care line elicits this automated response....

It used to happen just every so often, now I"d say I have a EDIT (20%) of getting through.

Any suggestions?

PS. I am using the Linksys RT31P2 router and I am currently in England - although hooked up to a very fast network.

The following applies when dialling North American numbers from a Vonage device with a North American number, no matter where the phone is located in the world.

If that recording comes on as soon (and I mean instantly) when you finish dialling, then Vonage has enough digits, but knows that the number (as it RECEIVED IT FROM THE PHONE) is invalid -- typically a bad area code. If there is a bit of a delay after you finish dialling, then not enough digits were received.

I get that recording if I am a bit sloppy dialling on one of my phones. That phone requires more deliberate and careful pressing of the buttons in order to generate clear Touch-Tone tones. If I don't dial carefully, usually one of the tones didn't get through. After a few seconds, the ATA will go ahead and send what it received to Vonage, and the error comes back. The other possibility is that a crappy phone can generate a double-digit when dialling; in this case you're likely to get the recording immediately (if the double digit was early) or actually reach a wrong number (if the double digit was later).

The fact that this is happening can be verified with a tool like WireShark. You'll see that your device sends an INVITE with a number other than what you thought you dialled.

For example: INVITE sip:1303555313@f.voncp.com:10000;user=phone SIP/2.0

One digit missing from the number above.

Thanks for the reply. Really appreciate it.

My phone is cheap ( Censored you Marks and Sparks!), but I have tried various 'methods' of dialing as I did wonder if was me jsut bieng slopy - and really tried to make sure I dial correctly; I tried short staccato, or long heavy dialing and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

And I have the long delay.

I will try to be even more......dialing...aware...in the future - although the problem seems to only happen at certain times (multiple tries over a short period of time), while other times it works fine. It could very well be that my brit phone is just about as bonkers as the rest of this country....

Thanks for the insight none the less.

L

EDIT: Just installed fink, for Wireshark (mac OS X) - any hints on how to get the INVITE thingy going?

Oh. A British phone. I don't know whether the problem has been solved, but... When I was actually working on an internationalisation project (so I'll spell it with an "s") back in the EARLY days of Touch-Tone (1981 or so), we discovered that the British Post Office (who ran the phone system in those days, now replaced by OFFREG) had decided that phones in the UK would generate a much lower audio level for their DTMF tones in order to minimize cross-talk in the crappy phone cables typically used.

This may still be the case, and your Vonage adapter might just not be getting loud enough tones.

Or the phone could just be wonky. Send me a PM and I'll give you a number for a Touch-Tone test that might help you see if certain buttons are worse than others. (It's in my home phone system, so I don't want to give it to the whole world.)
