I also have the WRTP54G and have had the same issue since March 22nd. I tried working through email support - and it has pretty much been non-existent, one reply and that was it.

Can we block any ports to stop the update ourselves? Does anyone know if this one update via TFTP?

Thanks to everyone in the forum, I was about to cancel my account and try another Voip provider, since the phone has basically useless for over a week.

If you are currently running a firmware other than 1.00.62 on your WRTP54G, you should phone Customer Service (preferably in the States) and have them re-apply the 1.00.62 firmware to your device.

There are no ports on the device that you can block to prevent the device from updating. On the other hand, if requested Vonage can prevent any new firmware updates being pushed to your device.

Thanks again everyone. I called Customer Support and got Level 1 in India - they did not know the issue and started having me go through the normal routing of unplugging everything, etc... convinced them it was a known issue with the firmware and she forwarded me on to Level 2 support. I would guess this person was in the US - he was very easy to understand and knew exactly what the issue was. He connected to the unit and reflashed it - and mentioned that this firmware update will not be released again until it goes through more testing.

Great, I got the pushed version again today. Locked up the router quite a few times. I guess the fix did not completely disable the issue from occurring again.

Sad Looks like another call to Vonage Support

Just adding myself to the list of folks hit by this. Having been through the Indian "tech support" maze before w/ Vonage, I'm opting just to reboot for now and hoping they'll fix this soon.

If not, guess I'll make the jump to CallVantage since its the same price and I can bid good riddance to this Linksys POS (which I hate to say, given my employer).

Cheers,
Munky

My Sunday upgrade schedule apparently stayed in pattern, because I'm now on 5.01.04 - but I have no idea how long I've been on that release, either....

So far, working perfectly. Of course, my WRTP54G is not used as a router, so maybe I'll never see any problems with it.

One oddity is that the QoS screen vanished from "Applications and Gaming" - of course, given that the QoS on the WRTP54G isn't worth the electrons it's burned into the firmware on, I say good riddance. Wink

Last time happened to me, I was without my Vonage phone for a week. Then I read this thread and called to get it fixed.

@ gduquette

Yes, I saw you called Vonage and had it fixed for a bit, but you posted that it came back. Was this not the case?

I'm willing to jump through the hoops once, but not once a week.

BTW, I've syslogged what's happening and suffice it to say that the box gets in a state some time after reboot (took 2 hours or so) where it reboots, then constantly runs through a cycle of initting the DSP, re-DHCPing for an IP, flushing the NAT table, etc. This repeats every 9 - 12 seconds until you manually reboot the box.

Once I grep through the logs for the pertinent stuff, I'll post back with what I see in the logs. It looks like it's trying to apply new code and gets in a restarting fit thereafter.

Cheers,
Munky

munky -

Have you tried turning off wireless? I know when the WRTP54G went from 1.00.18 -> 1.00.20 (or therabouts) a couple of years ago you had to turn off wireless to free up enough memory for the upgrade. I would not be at all surprised to learn that an upgrade from the last 1.xx release to a 5.xx release would require LOTS of free memory.

If it's getting caught in a reboot cycle, that's consistent with my memories of what happened during the old upgrades, and turning off wireless might free up enough router RAM to allow the upgrade to complete.

Mine went through the upgrade relatively smoothly, though I did have a problem last Monday when all of my calls were going to my Network Outage Number - and a simple reboot of the router cleared it up immediately. So I may actually have been upgraded a little over a week ago.

If that's the case, well, I was on conference calls nearly 12 hours a day last week and the Vonage line worked like a champ.

Even if it was upgraded Sunday, I was on 3-4 calls yesterday and sound was good. My conference call quality was unusually poor, but other people on the same call also complained, so I think that was a simple matter of people forgetting it was a conference call and taking very softly from a good distance from the phone.

In any case, 5.x seems to be good for me for at least 36 hours and maybe as much as a week. Of course, as stated earlier, I gave up trying to use the WRTP54G as a router some time ago, so I don't depend on it for anything but a Vonage adapter.

@ NateHoy

Yep, I did try that and still no joy. Perhaps it was your post that I Googled to find that workaround Smile
