Hi,
It would be appreciated if anyone who is using SoftPhone and a Vodafone 3G connection on a laptop could recommend a budget laptop that can use these.
The laptops I have seen reviewed in PC magazines seem very expensive (HP, Acer and IBM, £1000 to £1500). Are there no budget £400+ laptops available that can use 3G and SoftPhone?
I just need to be able to connect to the internet to check emails and to be able to receive and make Vonage calls via SoftPhone while I'm on the road, but I don't believe I need a super-fast, expensive, top of the range laptop to do such basic things.
Thanks.

Softphone can work well from a laptop. The limitations occur when an analog sound card bogs down translating digital/analog/digital. If you *do* have a problem, it can usually be overcome by use of a digital mic/headset or USB digital phone; this bypasses your onboard sound card.
I use a CyberphoneK (USB phone) at home and a Plantronics boom set on my Axim. (excellent sound quality on the Axim, BTW)
Your onboard mic and speakers may not be sufficient.
There is no reason to expect modern laptops to have trouble with VOIP. |

I just got the softphone this evening and I love it. I have a Compaq R4000 laptop and I am having no problem using it. I am sure most laptops will work, you just need an input jacks for headphones and mic and which most laptops have. |
