PostPosted: Thu Mar 22, 2007 8:22 am    Post subject: Can I find out if an outside phone is forwarded to my phone? Reply with quote Back to top

I am receiving a lot of wrong phone calls from a certain geographical area. I am thinking that either someone else has a line forwarded to this number or that Vonage didn't wait long before re-assigning a number and I'm getting all these calls.

Is there anyway of knowing if an outside phone is being forwarded to my Vongage phone number?

I have had to put all of my incoming calls directly to voicemail because of this. This leaves the system pretty much useless to me.

The only way is to politely ask a caller "what number are you calling, please."

and ask the complete info, name of the person he/she is calling to..then try to call Vonage to check the carrier's name..as soon as you got the number and the name of the company who owned that number, call the carrier right away to fix the issue. Wink

Unfortunately all of the calls are asian. So I only get something uninteligeable, at least to me, then the dial tone. I can actually map out the neighborhood where they are comming from.

Sounds like someone had that number you have no as well as a virtual number, and had the virtual pointing to your now-current number. Then at one point they decided to remove your now-current number form their account, but never removed that forwarding from their virtual number. this might need to be a ticket they'd have to look into, and go into the database and fix that virtual number

You can find out on your own whether the calls are going to your own number, your virtual number, or some other virtual number which is pointing at your number, or even a Vonage number forwarded to your number.

The Activity Log will show part of this information. It indicates whether the call went to your virtual number or to your actual number.

If it went to your actual number, you can eliminate Lnk64's theory by using a program like WireShark (you'll need to set up your network to allow it). Looking at packets coming towards your Vonage adapter on Port 5060, you'll see an INVITE "method" which will always have your actual number, but it will include within it a "To:" header which will show the Vonage number dialled. This will allow you to determine whether the callers are dialling your main number, your virtual number, or some other Vonage number.

You still cannot tell anything about an external number that might be forwarded to one of your Vonage numbers.

Here's what this looks like (an incoming INVITE always has the real number, From has the calling number, To has the number actually dialed, which could be real, virtual, or some other Vonage number, and Contact has the calling number):

Code:
INVITE sip:1678935nnnn@your.ip.address.52:5060 SIP/2.0

All of the these calls went through my virtual number. Vonage's answer so far was to go to my billing and change my phone number from there. Of course you cannot change your virtual phone number from that location. After several more emails they came up with cancelling my current virtual # and adding another one - of course with a service charge.
I guess I could do that but is it going from the frying pan to the fire? The once question that was in each of my emails that no one answered was how long does Vonage wait before re-issuing a phone number.
My local home line from Vonage gets call looking for the old phone number owner, but this town is a lot smaller than Toronto and the problem isn't so bad.
I will forget the email route and make a call with some of these suggestions.
Thanks
ps thanks for the SpellCheck (SpellCheck didn't have a suggestion for SpellCheck - lol)
