i have been waiting for years (literally) for Vonage to be able to port my number, and it STILL isn't available in this area. how do they determine what area they will expand into next, and how often do they add new available numbers?

Simple. They figure out what customers want then decide to not implement same.

really depends on your LEC (local exchange carrier), if they will allow Vonage to purchase local numbers or if and when Vonage is able to put up a way of translating the calls from the pots line to Voip in your area locally, which is how they are able to do it in areas where they are able to offer local numbers.

Local exchange carriers, or LECs, don't control the numbers. The FCC does. The FCC used to sell numbers in blocks of 10,000; however, they now do so in blocks of 1000.

Yes Vonage needs to Have a LEC in your area so they could port over your number. Also check if your number in not one of those numbers being "Freezed" so it couldnt be ported out by any other phone company. Heard Vonage will soon have this tool that could tell wanna be Vonage customers and existing customer when their number could be ported out should it cant be ported yet. We'll just have to wait and see. Lol

My guess is Vonage uses several means to decide if they offer local numbers in a given location (not necessarily in order of importance):

- Whether they can work a deal at a cost they consider favorable with a local CLEC

- Best guess for demand by potential Vonage customers

- E911 compliance

- How many people enter their area code and exchange in the "send me an e mail when Vonage is available" function on their website under Availability > "Check if you can keep your current number here"

I have noticed that over the past couple of years, the 580 area code (W OK) has come and gone as available. About 2 years ago it would be intermittently available, but only in Ada(?) (I can't remember for sure). Then, until recently, it would be intermittently available, but only in Enid. Now, it's intermittently available, but only in Tonkawa.

Maybe issues with buying small numbers of lines from CLECs.
